My cousin the nurse has the flu,she had the shot

My cousin is a public health nurse in Toronto, she has been working at the H1N1 vaccine clinics so of course she's been exposed to thousands of people. That job btw is very, very difficult and they have all my sympathy and support.

Anyhow, of course she had the H1N1 shot when the health care workers rcvd it awhile ago and this morning she tells me that she's home sick with the FLU!

I wonder if she got the H1N1 twice or if it could be seasonal flu?

She takes care of so many people, she's an amazing nurse and Mom so hopefully she'll get better soon!

I dunno, I hear things like this and I think of my DD getting it twice and it makes me question getting my kids the vaccine's.

It could take up to 3 weeks to achieve full strength from what I read, not sure how long ago she was vaccinated.

Also, flu vaccines are not 100% effective, so with the number of people getting exposed to it, there are going to be some number of people who had the vaccine but still get H1N1 anyway.

Even if you get H1 after the vac your going to have some preexisting immune response which will decrease the severity. Not everone who is vaccinated is going to get a high enough titer to totally prevent getting H1. I believe its around 96% get a high enough titer to give total protection

The PT who has been coming since I broke my hip had the shot and so did her two kids and husband. They all got the SF - she didn't. Go figure.
