Emergency Message to U.S. Citizens: Ankara (Turkey) General Extremist Threat Reminder
Threats
Europe > Turkey; Europe > Turkey > Ankara; Europe > Turkey > Istanbul
11/25/2011

The U.S. Embassy in Ankara reminds U.S. citizens of the potential for extremists to target both official and private interests abroad where U.S. citizens gather in large numbers, including during holidays. U.S. citizens should review the Department of State’s Worldwide Caution and the Country Specific Information for Turkey.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens and nationals traveling to or residing in Turkey enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens and nationals without Internet access may enroll directly with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Enrolling signs you up to receive updated information about areas abroad and make it easier for the U.S. Embassy or Consulate to contact you or your designated contact in case of emergency.

Why did you specifically bring a warning on TurKey to the lookout tower Pote ? Anyone from the forum coming here soon ? Just wondering ... There is no unusual activity or tension here folks ...

It just popped up on the US Department of State site.

I post them where we have an interest as a board. (Either we have members or I go there, or world events bring it to the front. )

It isn't personal.

I would guess this is in relation to the PKK issue.

I don't think PKK has any interest targeting groups of Americans in Turkey. But anyway it is good to know that this board frequently visits Turkey ;)

I appreciate Turkey's concern for Americans and will stay away.

I find the warning interesting because of possible political implications. Why is Turkey warning Americans now? Maybe it is because Iran is threatening to attack NATO facilities in Turkey.

Turkey is not warning Americans. DFA is warning its citizens, it is rather a normal alarming note for your agency (checked out a dozen countries and most of them have a warning of a similar kind from time to time) , that is why I replied to Pote's initial post.

My girlfriend spent two weeks in Turkey a couple months ago, Oric —her second trip there—and I would have been with her if I weren't presently enjoined from traveling for medical reasons. The is the sort of warning I would have wanted to at least be aware of.

By the way, she loved the trip. She found the people warm and welcoming, and was especially blown away by the Roman ruins.
