DH went to pick DDs up at martial arts last night, and was pulled aside by their instructor, who runs the school. See, we'd told them last month that December would be the the last month for the girls, at least for a while, as we had to cut back all but essentials. The girls are well liked there, and have been progressing faster than most of the rest.

Anyway, last night the instructor asked DH if he'd be interested in trading his cabinet making skills, for a few months of the girls' instruction. Yee haw! Seems they need some storage cabinets built at the building.

And so it begins.

Bartering is a great way to get what you need or want without having to resort to going into debt or spending money you dont have.

We have had a fairly robust bartering economy for a long time. Its great. It is also local:D

We also had someone offer to barter with us. We were having breakfast at our favourite pancake house (it's also a maple sugar camp) and we were asking the owner how business was going. I also asked about their chef night dinners and how they were doing - it's fancy, fine dining with a maple themed menu in a gorgeous log cabin. Anyway, I said we're always meaning to go but never seem to get there, and the owner said she'd be happy to give us a chef's night if I would give them a day's worth of office work and accounting services in exchange. Anything for a delicious meal that someone else prepares!!

I bartered a fabulous vacation for us last summer. I cleaned the toilets at the local campground and we stayed there the entire summer...kids went riding horses every day, canoeing, swimming, archery, all the fries and croissants and coke they could stuff into themselves, dinner three nights a week....plus, the clients were all Dutch and spoke perfect English, so we felt that we'd gone thousands of miles away from home. Hundreds of little Dutch kids for my kids to make friends with.

And I get to keep my camper in the covered arena for storage.

Same here. There is a HUGE amount of barter within the Chamber of Commerce. Service/product for Service/product.

Been going on for decades.

Blue Gecko & I barter regularly and so much that we long ago stopped even trying to keep track.

We both barter with others and often facilitate barter exchanges in what is now an informal bartering network.

Mostly I think it is all the Threefold Law. Give it away willingly and it comes back many times.

Any interest in starting a barter forum here? I notice a lot of you have your own businesses, crafts, farms, etc. Might be worth connecting with people we know from CE, for buy/sell and trade. We can keep it Downstairs and members only.

My first barter was about thirty-five years ago. I traded a cord of wood for some car repairs. My most recent barter was today, stacking a cord of wood for a toulouse goose that attacked an old lady one to many times. My buddy is going to give me two pheasants for it.

Yeah, I'm pretty familiar with barter out in the country, especially in the 70s when I was growing up. This is the first time, though, that I've encountered it in ages, and in a city, no less. Country folk I've always seen as barterers, or informal co-ops, like when three of us families got together, bought piglets, and housed them at one house. But I've just never seen city people think this way. Nice change.

BG, that's funny.

Barter is also huge on Craig's List and in specialized forums like
custom flashlight making, tactical watches and knives.

That does sound like a good idea!

I just bartered some of my herbal products for homemade candles at another forum. She approached me and I said sure!
