Feeling pretty? Hormones may lead to more..

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Women with high levels of estrogen not only look and feel prettier -- but they may act on those feelings by moving from man to man, U.S. researchers reported on Tuesday.
Estrogen, the so-called female hormone, affects fertility and has been shown to make women dress more provocatively and show more thrill-seeking behavior.
Dr. Kristina Durante of The University of Texas at Austin and colleagues found that young women felt more attractive when they had high levels of an estrogen known as estradiol, and they acted on those feelings.
"Women with higher estradiol reported a greater likelihood of flirting, kissing and having a serious affair with someone other than their primary partner and were marginally more likely to date another man," Durante's team wrote in the Royal Society Journal Biology Letters.
"Results provide support for the relationship between physical beauty and fertility and suggest that women high in reproductive health engage in opportunistic serial monogamy -- being open to affairs and moving on to a new relationship if a higher-quality mate becomes available."
Durante's team tested 52 female undergraduates aged 17 to 30 who were not taking hormone contraceptives. They took two estradiol samples from each, as hormone levels fluctuate from week to week.
They had the women rate their own attractiveness and showed their photographs to others to rate, as well.
"High-estradiol women were considered significantly more physically attractive by themselves and others," Durante and colleagues wrote.
The high-estrogen women also reported more sexual behavior -- especially outside of a relationship, although it was not linked to one-night stands.
"Our results are consistent with the possibility that highly fertile women are not easily satisfied by their long-term partners and are especially motivated to become acquainted with other, presumably more desirable, men," they concluded.
The findings fit in with many other studies showing that hormones influence the behavior and success of both men and women. Earlier this week, U.S. and British researchers showed that male financial traders whose finger lengths indicate high testosterone levels in the womb made more money.

I'm a bit curious to know how Hormone levels could affect physical rating's through photographs, I understand that scent can make a big difference but to change physical appearance to others is a long step to make.

Ratings of photographs compared to control group photographs probably.

On the anecdotal level I do think ladies' "attractiveness" changes through hormonal cycles.

I agree with that O.H but I think you would not notice the difference through photographs, it is due to a scent hormone rather than a visual cue, I have read info in regards to Women's scent perceptions while taking contraceptives and their perceived attraction to different Males while both taking and not taking contraceptives and they are very different, there was even a study done on Women who married and then stopped taking Contraceptives and then Divorced.
There are all sort's of studies and evidence for the effect's of scent and smell on Humans, it is after all one of our strongest senses, I cant count how many times a certain smell has bought back a host of memories to me, You can just imagine the subconscious effect smell has on the Human Animal.

I agree with all you said about sense of smell SC.

In re-reading the article I see I had missed that the photographs were of the same persons at different hormonal levels. Yes I do think photographs would show this.

Just in the face alone muscle tone, skin texture, fullness of lips might be subtly changed. Overall posture and body set would vary.

We probably could not know anything from looking at one picture of a person. But comparing photos at different hormonal levels could well provide an overall impression of "hotness".

An interesting variation would be to also rate the auditory impressions of voice.

What do you think?

There are plenty of signals that could pass through a picture, wet or open lips, eye expression, "come-hither" looks, skin and muscle tension or lack thereof, expression of confidence. Things photographers know quite well.

I have to agree with this. Of course scent plays an important role in attraction, but visual signals are there too, and can be captured in photos.

My initial reaction was the females had built in beer goggles, but the article actually says their photos taken and shown to others, so .... only thing I can think of is:

"has been shown to make women dress more provocatively"

While I agree that scent plays a big part in this, I believe a lot of it is in the eyes. Even a look from across the room will tell you volumes (as any guy can attest). Emotions are what is most viewable and all the hormones are doing is changing the emotions. And regardless of what the rest of the face is showing, the eyes always tell the truth.

Funny thing about women though. You can pretty much look a woman in the eye and tell if she wants to have sex with you. But she can be holding a gun on you and you can't tell if she'll really pull the trigger like you can with a man.

Strange wonderful birds, they are...

It's had it's moments so far...both awesomely good and frighteningly bad..;)

Course, all the hair raising parts were over long ago and long before Shirley. Now if/when we pass on the opportunity to go or do something we laugh about how we're turning into a couple of old fuddy duddys.

No chance on the book...the constant editing would take an eternity anyway...:ll:

and getting back to scents....why don't women realize that all that cologne stuff just overpowers their natural smell (which if they are a clean person is not bad anyway)? I mean, a little dab behind the ears is one thing, but some women can choke you down just by passing them in aisle at the store!! (cough, choke, gasp) I much prefer their true natural scent than being awash in este lauder or something....

/small rant....

I agree Ren, and this applies as well to makeup. There is no way really to improve on the perfection that nature has provided. But I think all this has more to do with how it makes them feel than how it makes us feel.

When my Lady feels good, feels pretty, feels confident, we are both happy.

Yep and men evolved as sight-hunters so it's probably more important than smell from the evolutionary breeding the fittest standpoint. More blood flow to the lips for a darker hue is a visual key towards mating readiness. Glossier hair cues to health and fertility etc. etc. all enhanced by the hormone cycle.
