More Digging
I thought I said I wasn't going to do this - extend the garden anymore. Okay, I lied. I think the border extends some 80 feet now - haven't measured it. I say dig - all I did was remove the top 3-4" of turf & clay & haul out tree roots. My butt is sore from falling back on it a good dozen times when tree roots finally decided to let go.
Tomorrow, I'll fork it over & dig in leaf mould & well matured lawn clippings. I've already got my rocks for stepping stones - might need a few more but I'll see tomorrow. I'm getting a little long in the tooth to be playing Twister every time I want to weed or deadhead...LOL
I spent the morning walking up to the garden center & had a throughly delightful time filling my bags with the least expensive perennials I've ever seen - got to be loss leaders. At least I thought so until I saw them unloading flats of 4/99 cent pinks! I might need 3-4 of those packs but not yet.
I bought:
2 day lilies & a coreopsis, 3 Oriental poppies, 3 heleniums, 3 mums, 3 larkspur & 2 columbines, 3 campanula & 7 primroses.
Not surprisingly, I'm going to move a few things. I have some plants of the 'wrong' colour for their location & other things that are just too close together.
I'm lucky in terms of weather. It will be a decent day & at the end of it, will cloud over & shower until Saturday - perfect planting & transplanting weather. It should be a fair bit warmer too.
I'm surprised - my bleeding heart didn't really recover from the last couple of really cold nights. The plant itself will be fine but the flowering stalks look like they're about to turn to mush. Oh well - at least I've identified the worst frost pocket in the garden.
I added a couple of before/after shots of what I dug up.
