My combination garden diary, plant list & photo page... because I've got to keep track of it all somewhere.

Fun Day Today

Posted 05-01-2012 at 10:22 PM by CanadaSue

Once the bulk of the work is done, I can relax, look, look some more & start tweaking things. I added a donated rose today that I'm told is pink. I should have seen it out front last year but honestly don't remember. It's former owner tried her best to 'kill it' over the winter, not mulching or giving it any protection. It lived - when I dug it up today there were lots of new shoots above the bud graft. The presence of that at least, tells me it's a hybrid - I really hope it's a floribunda.

To the newly dug up section, I added 3 clumps of yellow sundrops, (oenothera fruticosa) & 2 small clumps of lysimachia punctata variegata - more commonly known as circle flower or yellow loosestrife - not the nasty purple one but a reasonably well behaved garden cultivar. I shamelessly stole those from the abandoned community garden in the park. In exchange, I gave them 2 clumps of bee balm - red & pink, white & blue peach leafed bellflower & 2 tall, white columbines. Heck I may even clean out & weed that garden in case anyone wants to garden there.

After my Grand Theft Plant was done & my aquisitions planted, I added a small clump of trilliums & 4 starts of Jack in the Pulpit. I split some liverleaf & some yellow violets & moved those to the extension. Yesterday, I dug up & split a few primroses in bloom. Lord, I hated doing that but they're the standard 'grocery store' primroses & I figured if I killed them - no huge loss. I feel like an axe murderer dividing anything but the primroses made it easy - the divisions naturally fell apart. Violas are tough but the liverleaf - I swear I could hear the screaming of the roots. They'll do fine - I'm just not certain I will...LOL

We got 7/8" of rain overnight, 2/3 of our total for the entire monthg of April. Considering all the planting & transplanting I did these last few days, especially yesterday, the timing was perfect.

Tomorrow I might 'rescue' some decent soil from the old bed/border & use it to make the newest extension look a little less trailer park. The photo below shows the leaf mould & aged lawn clippings I hauled over - just before I turned it into the 'soil'. The results look pretty grim - great big lumps of organic stuff mixed with sullen clay. Some random sandy areas really throw a wrench in the works. I'll slowly add more good stuff over the summer & by this time next year - it will almost be respectable soil.
