Go With Me. Castle Freeman Jr.
I loved this book. Very spare. Knight errantry in hardscrabble Vermont. Chivalry isn't dead.
Lillian doesn't want to leave town, and Blackway the local criminal sociopath has smashed her window of the car and slit her cats throat.
Lillian won't run. Blackway has marked her down for his next ' lady'. AND her boyfriend, a local smart ass has run. '.
Lester an old man, and young Big Nate team up to track down the man.
It will be kill, or be killed in a rundown, hardscrabble Vermont backwoods, where only tough French loggers seem able to survive. And even they don't always manage. Lillian really doesn't understand what she has set in motion. She just wants Blackway to leave her be.
Personally I would have left this backwater and said good bye very easily, but maybe Lillian deserves to live there.
I love this book. As far as I'm concerned it is masterful writing.
I just took out his "All that I Have" out to read on this darkly dreary thunderstorm and lightning rainstorm.

I kept imagining it as a great, really juicy movie.
Academy Award calibre if it had the right casting.

"All that I have" was good, even excellent, but not quite as striking to me as "Go With Me".
Russian mafia buy lots of land in backwoods Vermont, and the local sheriff who has been coddling the local badboy, small time thieff, (who is screwing his wife) has to find the safe the local Erroll Flyn type badboy has stolen from the Russians who are very, very serious bad news, with his trailer trash girlfriend (Crystal is Seans Tuesdays lay) help.
Crystal has a great dog. He defingers one of the russians hands and rips his coat, so they have his fake passport. And of Course Crystal is pretty bad news herself. She blasts them with a double barreled shotgun. All the Russians in this book are serious trouble, but the local badboy is so pretty that the women in the book don't care.
Sean should head for Hollywood.
Crystal marries the sheriffs deputy who is running for the sheriff hero's job.
Sheriffs are elected every two years.
A Elwood Leonard type book.

The author says he based his story, or the inspiration was Mallory's Tales of King Arthur.

In a way it is about hostile, angry people. The ones you have to walk on eggshells around if not avoid entirely, the ones people try to placate with no effect.
