Proud to be an American

Posted 11-05-2008 at 09:29 PM by dyrt

I am very proud to be an American. In one generation we have changed ourselves to such a degree that it seems impossible to any student of the history of racism.

As a child there were no negroes in my schools. They went to their own school. The language and violence against people of color was blatant and openly accepted. I grew into a young man during the late 60's and 70's. I lived the big change. And now a "black" president. We all should be very proud no matter what comes next.

What other country can cross that threshold? Will the British elect a "black?" How about the Japanese, Chinese or Russians? How about the French? In their joy over our election will they look in the mirror and ask, why not us? We will see.

I detest Obama's politics but have pride and joy in my heart because of his election. Pride because of American's ability to adapt and change. Pride because of our amazing human rights record of my generation. Joy, because I can easily see the importance of Obama as a symbol for hundreds of millions of people in the world. He has truly changed the world.
