Kindergarten Report Card

My goofy dad judgement may be colouring (Canadian spelling
) things, but it seems like my daughter's first report card from Kindergarten looks pretty good so far.
It's kind of interesting to read as there's no grading (yet?) but instead more of a general commentary/summary of what they've done to date. I'm going to have to dig out my old report cards as all I seem to remember is just the odd A/B/C/D/F rating with little or no comments. Kindergarten, of course, could be a whole different ball of ball of wax as I'm not sure how valuable it is to get a grade for a childs skill in colouring, cutting paper along lines, etc.
The breakdown is as follows:
Personal and Social Responsibility
This is a pretty general overview of how she behaves in class - basically she plays nice and is making friends with her classmates. She acts appropriately in class and is able to complete tasks by herself in the allotted time. In general she has a positive attitude towards learning and strives to do her best, most of the time.
Dad's take:
It sounds like Renée is progressing nicely learning those important first few lessons from Robert Fulghum's "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten". It's good to hear that she's well liked by her peers. We know that she's already made some good friends as we hear about Paulina all the time. Apparently Paulina's parents hear the same about Renée.
Good to hear about her positive learning attitude - I'll let the "most of the time" go, given that she's only 5...
German Langauage Arts Kindergarten
We have this category since she's in the German Bi-lingual program. They're basically working in some seasonal themes into their learning (All About Me/Fall/Halloween/etc.) as well as some German letters and the German words for 11 colours. She's making an excellent start.
Dad's Take:
Yup - I'm hearing German sprinkled in her conversations at home. I'm going to have to start a self-study German for myself to attempt to keep up or else the girls will eventually realize that they have a way to keep dad in the dark.
English Langauage Arts/Early Literacy
She's listening attentively, not interrupting and participating in stories, poems, songs and group discussions. She has an interest in books and is making a good progress with home reading.
Dad's Take:
Good to hear all the home reading is helping out.
Social Studies/Citizenship and Identity
Focus has been on being responsible classroom citizens and on learning to be safe in school, the neighborhood and as a padestrian.
Dad's Take:
Important stuff - I don't ever remember having to learn about neighborhood safety when I was a kid but we certainly teach about it now.
Mathematics/Early Numeracy
Learing about counting and awareness of the numbers 1-31 including counting them in German as well.
Dad's Take:
She's good up to 29 - we have to work on the thirty and then she's good for another nine.
Environment and Community Awareness
The class had a field trip to the local Wilderness Centre and discussed season changes with respect to making observations using their 5 senses.
Dad's Take:
Sounds like early science training...
Physical Skills and Well-Being
Small Muscle Skills - cutting along lines & printing legibly - showing improvement
Large Muscle Skills - she's an active participant in physical education - running, jumping, skipping, listening & following direction
Dad's Take:
Definitely doing better on the printing and she's asking how to spell certain words. Letter spacing will need some work as she hasn't quite realized that we try to group the letters of a word close together on the same line. I'm seeing her grow on the physical side - she doesn't need me to push her on the swing any more. When I mentioned that she's growing up on me because she doesn't need me to push she was quick to explain that while she can do it herself she'll still sometimes likes to have me push her... (where's that melt Daddy's heart smilie?)
Creative Expression
The kids experiment with art using brushes, pencils, crayons & crayon resist; learn about some German celebrations and other themes and participate in group songs, poems and action verses.
Dad's Take:
Not much of her artwork is making its' way home - apparently the girls like to give their personal artwork to their friends rather then bring it home to show the parents. Scrapbooking mom has put in a request to have her at least try to bring some home...
Kindergarten Music
No formal assessment, but they've been exploring the different ways to use their voices and some initial instruments.
Dad's Take:
I've been hearing new songs at home - some I know and some that I can only translate a few words of...
