Movie Review: Changeling

WARNING: Spoilers

Believe it or not, I'm selecting movies out of a hat. Going to see many of them without knowing a thing about them. This makes it interesting because I don't know if we're set to see a 1947 Roswell, or something unrelated to Aliens in that time period.

Today I watched Changeling. My first reaction was... "hey wait, is that... Angelina Jolie?", then later "hey wait, is that... John Malkovich?". Yes, that was them.

Supposedly this movie is based on true events. I can best describe this movie as belonging in the "feel good cop brutality" movie genera.

Ms. Jolie is a single mother with a 9 year old son, who vanishes one day. 5 months go by and the police alert her that her son has been found. She is beyond words and ecstatic. However, when she sees her son, it is apparent the child found isn't hers. To make matters worse, the police have been battling a lot of bad publicity, so they have made a big deal about doing something right. They pressure her into taking the child, and claim it's been 5 months, her son has lost weight and might not look the way she remembered. They provide Doctors that give her medical explanations why her son lost 3" in height, how he might have gotten circumcised, etc. To make matters worse, the "stand in Son" plays along. We don't know why. Maybe he's from a broken family and he's been told to act like she's his Mother so he can have a home.

The thing is, that isn't her son. The police refuse to look into the case, and this is the start of her descent into hell.

Because this is a good movie, I'm not going to give away how it ends or what else is in store. Suffice to say that Angelina Jolie plays a role she doesn't usually play - that of a meek subservient woman from the 30's.

Good plot, good acting, two thumbs up.
