Movie Review: Australia
Wow. This is the first time in a while that I wanted to not watch a movie. The first hour or so was painful.
Before I get to that, let's recap what this movie is about:
Sounds pretty serious, must be a war/drama type movie? You'd be incorrect. It starts off like a comedy or an artsy type film. Odd camera work, everything is whimsical. Then people die and we replace whimsy with an annoying woman. Enter Nicole Kidman, playing the character Lady Sarah Ashley. I swear I wanted to slap her silly. Her character is immature, and snobby. Oddly enough, as the movie progresses, they slowly phase out the annoyances with her character and start having her act more normal.
I can only guess that they wanted the pre-war drama to unfold with the innocence of regular life, and the post-war half to bring home the horror that is war. Even so, I don't think this justifies how much of a pain the movie was to watch initially.
I wouldn't recommend it, even though it scored a 7.2 on imdb.
PS: Hugh Jackman was OK, but even a decent performance didn't save the film. I saw no reason for it to run 3 hours long.

Quote:
"Set in northern Australia before World War II, an English aristocrat who inherits a sprawling ranch reluctantly pacts with a stock-man in order to protect her new property from a takeover plot."
