Movie Review: The Watchmen

I don't watch television, so I don't know the hype that may or may not have been pushed via commercials for this movie. Assuming the viewer knows nothing about the movie or the illustrated novel, The Watchmen has a title that bores even myself. Now factor in a film about caped superheros (who have no super powers) who are seen prancing about in spandex, and it is starting to sound like a made for TV movie.

Be that as it may, The Watchmen is a deeper movie than you might think. Even if someone tells you that it is deeper than you think, 3/4ths of the way through, you will still think "It's not that deep, What are these morons talking about?"

The action is top notch. The special effects (including blue swaying penises) craftily done. The plot is well written and plays out well. Overall, there is little to complain about.

Rather than describe it, I will say that the start of Watchmen plays out like the first half of "The Incredibles" animated movie mixed in with a little of "Lost" with time jumps back and forth to explain the history of the characters. By midway through, it has turned into a detective novel mixed with James Bond. By the end, it's some sort of twisted mix of sci-fi space, confused gods, ultimate bomb showdown, maniacal evil villain movie. If you're confused, don't worry, it isn't as confusing as it sounds. Just watch it.

Caution - nothing is as it seems.

I know the premise behind the movie - would I be missing out on a lot by not having read the graphic novels yet?

the people who have read the novel claim it's better to have read the novel first, then watch the movie.

I read a few chapters of the novel, and the movie is almost dead on accurate - so I don't think that is the case. A new person can watch the film and follow everything without issue.

There's only a few small things that the movie doesn't cover, like why the weird animals in the final scene. It doesn't add anything to the overall film so not a big deal.
