My combination garden diary, plant list & photo page... because I've got to keep track of it all somewhere.

First day of spring!

And pretty mild it was too - cloudy, very little wind & things are a-happening.

My first sunny, yellow crocus burst into bloom 2 days ago - little sparks of sunshine randomly scattered on the otherwise dreary gardenscape. And the squirrels have me by the short & curlies. If I don't keep them well fed, tyhey're more than happy to eat the flowers off my crocus... they even uprooted one & ate the bulb the little sneaks!

I'd planted a good 50-60 crocus & so far not anywhere close to that many are coming up. Either they're late or the squirrels got quite a few. Most were planted in a cool, shady bed... I'm hoping they're simply a bit late to the party.

I have several patches of reticulated iris coming up - not blooming yet but hopefully within a week or so. One lone patch of anemones are showing delicate little leaves. I know I planted way more than that & am hoping the others are coming up under a shltering blanket of leaves.

My first few daffodils have stuck their blunt noses out of the ground as well. Tulips & allium should be next & that's about it for bulbs this year.

The perennials are slowly making their presence felt. I found one lady's mantle plant with tightly furled little fans coming up. I've got another one somewhere - haven't relocated it yet. A couple of day lilies have appeared, my columbine are truly coming out now & should put on a lovely show in time. 2 lungworts are putting out a few new leaves.

It's still very, very early days & everything is weeks early so I'll not complain if things seem slow. That's more a function of my impatience than a reluctant garden. I'm managing to successfully fight off the urge to rake off old leaves - they're best left where they are for now. I will though, trim off some overhanging small branches from nearby trees. They're growing too thickly & adding too much shade. I could safely pull out my edger & clean up the edges of the borders & beds.

And time too, to start working the soil in the 4 borders around the building entrances.

Soon, SOON, it will be time for REAL garden work - the fun stuff.

Mine in the shade are quite a bit later than the ones in the sun, Sue. Have patience.

(I had no idea you had a blog, by the way)
