Optimism WHY?

Posted 06-13-2012 at 04:43 PM by lilly

I have always been optimistic no matter what transpires.

I wonder why?

Genetic?

Also happy, come hell or high water.

Take that, old man trouble.

Sitting in a cool library during a heat wave and watching the towns people go in and out like the tides. The mayor and his dog, one of the older and most gorgeous and well dressed women I know, adults, babies, whining toddlers, teens, adults, older residents, men, women, chatting, interacting and getting some needed relief from the intense heat which reached 100 yesterday.

I haven't read this book, but I will eventually, From 50 Rules by Barbara Hannah Grufferson. This little tidbit is something with which I agree 100%.

" Love yourself. Love your life. Stay as healthy as you can. Move your body. Be informed. Use your mind. Be brave. Walk with confidence. Live with style. And you will always have the best of everything".

Today resting and reading in a cool well air conditioned library during a heat wave.

Reading in a cosy reading room in a comfy armchair. Lunch on a bench overlooking the libraries well tended garden of ferns and lilies and hydrangias.

No matter what happens, there are always these little joys and breaks in the most difficult of days.

Everything is falling apart in my house and my aged car.

But I am looking at the good points of not having the use of the car.

The senior jitney thingee is a mess. The driver morose, (ill and cranky) and the jitneys brakes failed on a steep hill, so the jitney is problematic. Will it or will it not be opperational next week? Who knows. So I am back to walking and using the Train.

Now it isn't all that pleasant and I can't get to the places I want to go, or do exactly what I want to do which is somewhat frustrating, but... I am coping, and I won't ask the neighbors to drive me anywhere unless it is emergent.

With an optimistic temperment I am looking at it as an opportunity to walk in a heat wave, and during the summer when I never, never would have set foot outside getting from house to car and to my varied destinations.

    An opportunity to exercise.

I have tried all sorts of exercise and I hate it. I was athletic when I was younger but no longer.

I can't say I love walking in this high heat, but I love getting to do at least some of the things I want to do.

Today the farmers market at another towns train station, the library and possibly the movies.

At my advanced age Exercise isn't my thing.

Getting to where I want to go by walking is.

As my deceased sister in law said. No matter what happens you think it is for the best. Events turn out one way, and you find something to relish in the result, and with the very opposite result you seem to find the pony in the pile of manure.

    The advantages of optimism.

Our crowded little town library is too stuffed with youngsters to patronize during the summer, so I am taking a train in to another town with a very large airy and well air conditioned library. Less people wandering in and out than our tiny cramped library.

My car has a major problems, my air conditioning is kaput and we are the 11th day into a heat wave.

But I have found the pony in the manure pile.

I am getting fit walking to and from the train. Just today I loped to the station in less than 15 minutes, which took me 25 minutes when I started this trek into the bigger city. I'm doing it at a breakneck pace which seems natural. I must be building muscle mass, because I walk damned fast now, I lope along as if I were cross country skiing. Though the sun still slows me down. In the shade I'm doing great.

And if the blood pressure machine at Walmarts is accurate, my blood pressure has dropped to 117 over 77.

The power of positive thinking is said to extend your lifespan by 7.5 years. Who knows?

A decent old age is a complex interaction of genetics, chemistry, physiology and behavior, plus all the damage we have accumulated over a long life span.

The best we can do, is after all the best we can do.

Not good to be obsessive about it, but worth trying to live a full life with some meaning, while trying to keep back the sands of time with reasonable eating and some exercise.
