Opera, Ballet, etc... My favorites.
Mozart. La ci darem la mano. Don Giovanni, seduces a new bride Zerlina at her wedding... Stay with it as it does get very interesting after a while. I like the staging and the Don, though this Zerlina doesn't have the best voice and is a bit matronly in figure, not girlish. A nice profile. HIs costume great, hers? not the best peasant outfit around.
The Plot. Don Giovanni will seduce any female for sport. Fat, thin, old ,young.
This is the last day of his life, though he doesn't know it yet. He is treading on thin ice. He has murdered the Commendatore, a man whose daughter he has attempted to rape. The dead man as a statue is invited by the Don to dinner and the Commendatore will drag Don Giovanni down to hell later that nite and everyone will be relieved. He never will be missed.
Here he spots a young bride to be, a peasant girl. He tells her she is too pretty to waste on a clod like her fiance. It is his villa, and she is so pretty that he will marry her. Her fiance had left in disgust accusing her of flirting with the Don. She hesitates, does want the Don but knows noblemen are tricky and she might end up with no husband at all. A battle between basic good sense and reason and hearts desire and attraction and becoming a noblemans wife... But.... she waivers, then throws caution to the winds and decides he is serious (love at first sight) and will marry her. LOL. Ya betcha he will.
He has a good line and women swallow it hook line and sinker. Promise her anything and get her to bed.
A former victim, Elvira, catches him at it and warns and saves Zerlina, who later makes good with her fiance by offering to let him beat her. (He comes back later with friends to rough up the Don)
This Don Giovanni is really sweating it out in his multi layored costume. A great costume but hot as hell. Shirt, vest, coat and leather great coat, plus a fantastic wig. There are other Dons, better voices, like Fischer Diskau, but this Don has a brute force that is interesting. Very animalistic portrayal of a hot man used to getting what he wants, with too much testosterone than is good for him. Someone is his mid thirties who doesn't need Viagra, but does want endless variety.

I have been watching a lot of versions of this aria.
I like Hvorostovsky for his sexiness and strong baritone.
Deitrich Fischer Diskau for his German translation, and silky voice. Luscious. He died recently in his eighties.
Thomas Allen for his acting skills and excellent baritone. He reminds me of an old beau of mine. So I remember him when I watch Allen, who is dead. I also like his Silent Worship by Handel.
Bryn Terfel for his strong Baritone.
It is considered one of the best of the best operas. While it isn't one of my favorites. When it comes to Mozart,The Marriage of Figaro is mine.
Still it is compelling. Even Casonova weighed in on the libretto in Prague. La Ponte came to the United States and lived in Elizabeth New Jersey. odd bit of info.
The story of the last day in the life of Don Giovanni is compelling. In one day, he tries to rape Donna Anna, kills her father, is chased down by Donna Elvira who loves him, and who saves a peasant girl Zerlina from a devastating seduction, by this faithless and lying nobleman who will say or do anything to have his way with endless women.Posted 06-26-2012 at 01:42 PM by lilly
