Thursday, 12 May 2011 – Run for the border again

Jorge had been telling me that if you take the Volcan road all the way through town and on up into the hills, it was a really pretty drive. It went all the way up to the border. This was my last full day in Volcan, so I decided to see more of the countryside and do it. It was as described. Once again, words fail. You would have to see it to believe it.

The little border town, unlike the big border crossing and free trade zone on the Panamerican Highway, there is no marked border. You are going through this little town, and the road suddenly goes from nice blacktop to dirt and rocks. You look up, and there is a sign on the sleazy bar on the other side of the intersection that says 'Bienvenidos Costa Rica'. So when the road goes to shit, you have crossed the border.

I kept hearing from everyone that I had to try the hamburger at the restaurant. So I made sure I got back for lunch, and ordered a bacon cheeseburger with grilled onions and mushrooms. They brought me out this monster burger that was easily over a half-pound of fresh ground sirloin on a bun baked that morning in a local bakery, with a pile a crispy fries on the side. $6, which was expensive by their standards, and worth every penny of it. The buzz about the burger was quite accurate.

So for dinner it was fillet mignon in a red wine reduction with plantains and salad, and the passion fruit mousse for dessert. That was a really good piece of meat. The whole meal was $13. This is my last evening in Volcan, so I packed my stuff to leave the next morning. Bummer.
