Which presumably most people do anyway ... unless you are a programmer.
I assume this is because they don't want people to copy large amounts
of their stuff and process it so to make a twitter2 from it

What "using their API" means is that they don't want you copying and pasting, but they don't mind using a special app to pull it in with. An example of this is that you can use a special app (which uses Twitter's API) to have your twitter posts to automatically go to your blog or your facebook page.
