“The cause of tree death, called yellow-cedar decline, is now known to be a form of root freezing that occurs during cold weather in late winter and early spring, but only when snow is not present on the ground,” Paul Hennon said.

Ironic that a form of death related to freezing is being attributed to WARMING..,
Basically, what it seems to boil down to is that there is not enought snow cover to protect the trees roots from freezing weather.

Yellow-cedars grow slowly, many reaching ages between 700 and 1200 years old.

But interestingly enough the disease known as "
Yellow Pine Decline" has only been noted for about the past 100 years. Is it a co-incidence that this is about the duration of the greatest expansion of the modern industrial revolution?
There is potential to help the tree population and promote it's return.

The paper concludes that "conservation and management activities need to follow the shifting snow patterns on the landscape." This suggests foresters should deliberately grow yellow-cedar forests into favorable directions, nudging the forests towards areas with deeper snowfall.
