Exclamation Japan Suspends New Nuke Power

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/11/wo...n.html?_r=1&hp

Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Tuesday that Japan would abandon plans to build new nuclear reactors, saying his country needed to “start from scratch” in creating a new energy policy.

Pre-Quake: Japan has 54 reactors. Plans to build 14 more for total of 68.
Now: Japan has 42 reactors, with plans to build no more.

You title is a little misleading.

They aren't giving up on nuclear power forever, they are just giving up on the current plan.

Think Asian. They are expected to do that. They will form a new committee, redraw the plans at a later date which will include nuclear.

There is no way Japan can survive at their current level of society without nuclear, even more nuclear.

Coal and natural gas taking up the slack is impossible in Japan.(Transportation costs.)

Wave, wind and solar doesn't bring electricity cheap enough yet per kwh. Wave is a pipe dream. Can you imagine thousands of turbines along the coast of Japan? No way. Solar requires reasonable flat land. Most of it already has something on it.

Yea, they will be building those new nuclear plants eventually.
