Talking We Might Finally See Some Winter!

WOCN11 CWTO 220312
Special weather statement
Updated by Environment Canada
At 10:12 PM EST Monday 21 November 2011.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Special weather statement for:
Halton Hills - Milton
Caledon
York - Durham
Kitchener - Cambridge - Region of Waterloo
Guelph - Erin - Southern Wellington County
Belleville - Quinte - Northumberland
Napanee - Consecon
Kingston - Odessa - Frontenac Islands
Peterborough - Kawartha Lakes
Stirling - Tweed - South Frontenac
Bancroft - Bon Echo Park
Brockville - Leeds and Grenville
City of Ottawa
Gatineau
Prescott and Russell
Cornwall - Morrisburg
Smiths Falls - Lanark - Sharbot Lake
Haliburton.

Some freezing rain and the first general snowfall of the season
possible Tuesday night into Wednesday.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
==discussion==

A low pressure system is forecast to emerge from the southern plains
of the us overnight then track northeast into Ohio by Tuesday
evening. Precipitation ahead of this disturbance will move into
Southwestern Ontario Tuesday evening and spread eastward overnight.

Precipitation is expected to come in as rain over the southwestern
regions north of Lake Erie. However, with cold air in place farther
to the east and north, precipitation will likely fall in the form of
snow or a mixture of snow and rain. There is also a risk of freezing
rain in all of the above regions and freezing rain warnings may be
issued.

Current indications suggest that snowfall amounts will be well below
the 15 cm mark for snowfall warning criteria but it could reach 5 to
10 cm in some locales by Wednesday morning in the regions east of
Toronto. The precipitation is expected to taper off from the west
later Wednesday morning.

Motorists in the area should be prepared for poor winter driving
conditions. Visibility will be less than 1 km at times in periods of
heavier snow. Accumulating snow or freezing rain on untreated roads
will make driving conditions difficult.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as
warnings may be required or extended.

END/OSPC

AWE-SOME! Except I don't think it's going to be cold enough here for anything to stick once it hits the ground. It's beloe freezing now & will be until mid-morning tomorrow but we've only seen morning frosts until today when it stayed below freezing save for two hours of just above. Ground won't be cold enough for snow to stick or freezing rain to stay frozen.

We're still warmer than we should be for this late in November.

Default Yip - She's Coming

When I left at 1100 to get my groceries done it was a pretty morning, calm, bright sunshine & just a few degrees below freezing. I got home at 1215 & it was already cloudy with what I call 'winter weather' cloud patterns. If I had the weather boffin vocab, I'd explain that better but I don't...LOL So let's just say it's a dusty cotton batting coloured cloud with long, thick 'streamers'. The air feels different too - softer, if that makes sense.

I quickly unpacked my groceries & before I did anything else, I fed my birds & tree rats. Doublt rations of premium mixed bird seed, generous amounts of barley for the doves, pigeons & crows & black oil sunflower seed. I thought about topping it up but we're within an hour of dusk, so there's little point. All feeding will soon cease but they're going into the first nasty night of the season with full tummies.

At 1502, a freezing rain warning popped up - no details yet - I think they're still trying to work out how much rain, ice pellets, freezing rain & snow we'll get. The Weather Channel just put up the red screen of death & the weather binbo is grinning - yup... something wicked this way comes.

I've got supper pretty much prepped; wrap mix for now & our main meal won't be until SD comes back from work at 2300 so before I peel spuds, I think I'll mosey on downstairs & see if my neighbours, (elderly & very frail this year), need bread, milk or anything like that at the store. Nothing will hit here for many hours yet.

I loves my nasty winter weather, I does! I don't have to shovel walks or snow away from basement level windows... We just shut the windows & turned on the heat... because we can. I may bake a cake... because I can & other than that, comfy evening & part of the night to stare out the window & maybe go play in the ice.

Tomorrow's walk downtown to my appointment should be fun but I'm staying off the roads - rail cut for me!

Freezing rain warning for
Kingston - Odessa - Frontenac Islands issued

Freezing rain likely beginning this evening.

A low pressure system from Texas is moving across Indiana and will track northeast across Ohio tonight then over Pennsylvania by Wednesday morning.

Precipitation ahead of this disturbance is expected to reach south Central Ontario early this evening, and Eastern Ontario later this evening. Temperatures are forecast to be at or just above freezing at the time. Precipitation may begin as rain but will quickly change to freezing rain. A prolonged period of freezing rain, about 3 to 6 hours, is likely for most of the warned areas. 2 to 5 mm of ice build up is possible. Freezing rain may change briefly to rain or snow before ending overnight over south Central Ontario, and Wednesday morning over Eastern Ontario.

Untreated roads and other surfaces will quickly become slippery, resulting in hazardous travelling conditions. Motorists are advised to use caution and adjust travel plans accordingly.

We are sooooo close to precip. The radar shows the leading edge hitting the city & the weather station at the airport is recording snowfall. With the system coming in from the southwest against a northeast wind & snow having started at the airport at 2024, we should see something by 2100.

If we don't, I shall sulk mightily.

I WANTS NASTY WINTER WEATHER!!!

2056 - it's started. We had about three snowflakes then it turned right to a combination of ice pellets & freezing rain. We're expecting 3-6 hours of it & I'm grateful it will turn to rain well BEFORE morning rush hour. I'm surprised we've gone this long before any winter weather - we're weeks late. Environment Canada has been bang on with their seaosnal forecasts for at least the past 18 months. Thus... I'm taking their call for a nasty January/February seriously. We're to expect a lot of snow in the form of many significant storms. Significant for us, that is. Due to our geography, we just don't get 'big' snow more than once every 4-5 years. Heck, most winters we don;t even see reliable snow cover for more than a week at a time. Last year was the first winter we actuallt a season's worth of snow cover.

I'm sitting here bundled up in my housecoat watching Biggest Loser & during ad reaks muting the sound & listening to ice fall through the open window. I'm warm & cozy & safe.

I DID go out & give my birdies some extra food. They knew we had weather coming - they came out & stuffed their little faces even though they normally don't feed here this late in the day. I worry aout those little buggers in winter. Evergreen thickets still aren't fully wind & weatherproof.

Default Woah!

First - cats... it's not necessary to wake me up in hysterics: "Mommy, mommy, oh come see. Look - the world is white! Strange things are falling from the sky. The trees are tinkling like wind chimes & look at the pretty sparkles on the branches!"

I'm awake now - at least I'm upright & more or less mobile. No sense going back to bed - alarm was set for an hour from now anyway. There looks to be about an inch of snow on the ground & as I listen to it fall, there's some percentage of ice pellets in it. I suspect there's a pretty thick coating of ice - at least 1/4" under the snw because when I woke up to go to the bathroom at three, it was still freezing rain.

I honestly didn't think it would be this bad. We were right on the ragged edge of the forecast zone for sustained freezing rain and/or snow but it seems the system shifted south about 20 miles - enough to nail us good. And it's STILL snowing. The weather warning was just updated & this will not end until mid-morning. I espected at most, an hour or two of off/on freezing rain that would promptly turn to a heavy, wet rain overnight.

Nope - we got the full monty & the morning commute will be hell. Bad luck that our first winter weather event turned out to be an icy mess rather than a straight snowfall.

Awfully pretty though - still mulling over walking to my appointment & taking the camera...
