How long do you give them the increased amount? 6 months? 1 year? 2 years? Like unemployment?

We want to throw more money at these problems. It is the easy thing to do.

The SMART thing to do is to educate them if they are deficient. Have the classes to teach the snowflakes not to buy beer and pizza but to be frugal, cook some, and sometimes bind with other poor students to do some "critical mass" things together.

You would be "teaching them to fish" instead of giving them the fish. These are skills if learned when there is a safety net, can serve them well the rest of their lives. (Unemployment, tough times, "baby needs a new pair of shoes", or just being frugal to create a financial safety margin.

Actually, my point was NOT to give them more money (I am not sure why they are getting this allowance in the first place) but that education is needed. And not after they get to college. I am not blaming the schools for this. Those sort of life skills are the teaching responsibility of the family. Yes, I know that there are those who have such dysfunctional families, that no such instruction can take place. But really, is this the situation in the majority of the families sending their youth to college? There might be a place for remedial training for the small percentage who do not come from a functioning family unit, but why would it be needed for the rest? I don't know HOW to get people to once again take responsibility for themselves and their offspring, but I do know that unless that happens in the near future, we are going to have more problems than whiney college students who demand to have their hands held and their butts wiped for their entire college career.

BG, you find those prices cheap,I find them horribly high.
Milk runs about $2/gal.Has been in that area for about a year.I figure it will eventually go back up, but i`m enjoying it while it lasts.
Pizza pockets are about $1,50 a box, 4 in a box. The cheap frozen pizza is around a buck. You have to pay around $5 for a good one.
I dunno about bread. I started baking all my own, when the kind I would eat hit $4, a couple of years ago.

Every school my daughter applied to this year required students to buy a meal plan if they were living on campus. Is that not the same in Canada?

At the local Valero gas/stop and rob they are running a special.

Two double meat hamburgers (in a package) plus 20oz soda, US$3.

I just checked University of Guelph, where I went to school, and there are only two of the dorms that you are required to purchase a meal plan. These, of course, are the two cheapest buildings that make up on-campus housing. I haven't been able to find the cost of the meal plan yet, but when I was there, I became friends with a guy who was a second year student, who had lived on campus the first year, and had the meal plan. He was no pig, about 5'6" not huge, and he said he about starved on that meal plan. The next year he took his chances with off-campus housing and getting his own food. He said his meal plan ran out that first year about a week before the end of his exams, and for a week he lived on some bread and peanut butter that someone else left behind in res when they'd gone home. He said it was the worst week of his life, both physically and mentally.

'K, found the meal plan prices. They have more flexible ones (pay as you go kinda' cards), but I believe these are the plans to choose from if you live in a building where you are required to purchase. This is for ONE semester, so say late August to the end of December, or January to May. FREAKIN' EXPENSIVE! Ranges from $385/mo. (12.42/d) to $595/mo. (19.19/d).

Plan Size Amount
Minimum $1,540.00
Light $1,790.00
Full $2,015.00
Plus $2,205.00
Varsity $2,380.00

You can 'bake' some kinds of cookies in a frying pan, too. Found that out when my oven died as I was trying to bake oatmeal-raisin cookies.

Let them cool all the way before popping one in your mouth.

They will get cool on the outside but when you close it is like shooting hot lava in your mouth.

An increasing number of colleges & universities here are insisting students in dorms buy meal plans. And yes, it's expensive I find. I ran a few prices past my fellow Tuesday night bingo staffer - she runs a kitchen for a living. Her conclusion is that a nice little profit is being made but probably being channeled into other student areas requiring higher levels of financing. Makes sense.

Girlfriends as catering? They can't cook either; not really. One big downside of working families is the time crunch. So many race home from work, have to pick up one kid somewhere, drop off another to a different activity & pick that child up later. Errands, shopping, meal prep goes down the tubes & convenience foods have become the new staple.

Hey, Pot...thank Ms. Pot for the no-bake cookie recipe. DD#2 made them tonight when there were no chocolate chips to make chocolate chip oatmeal cookies.

Most have outsourced campus meals to companies like SODEXO, which only bid on them if they make a substantial profit.

if you are living on $7.50 for food a day you probably have a bike for transport and hopefully you have enough money for a rack on the back that you can use to attach a basket to and we assume you have utensils and some pots and pans silverware etc

$7.50 /day * 7 = $24.50 for the week
I THINK I could get all this at the local grocery . . . I know I have eaten from this meager list before

3 potatos
rice 1 lbs
noodles 1lbs
dried beans 1lb
dozen eggs
bread
one whole chicken
salt/pepper
2 each apple/pear/banana
1lb sugar
coffee/tea?
butter/margarine
peanut butter and jelly

feels like I am back in college . . .

I think $7.50*7=$52.50

Add a little more to the grocery cart.
