Default Watch just popped up here

For the past 90 minutes or so, we've been getting periods of monsoon-like rain - exceptionally heavy, straight down stuff.

A severe thunderstorm watch just popped up - no surprise, since darkfall, temperature has increased & the humidity as well. We've heard thundershowers pass to the north of us & the radar certainly supports the watches.

Think I'll be staying up a while - we get spectacular views of these storms from our livingroom window.

Tornado warning prompts red alert for all of southern Ontario
680News staff Jun 23, 2010 21:02:56 PM
Be the first to Comment 21 Recommendation(s)
The province updated a "red alert," Wednesday, for an immediate threat in all of southern Ontario after tornado activity was reported in and around the Midland area.
The town's mayor has declared a state of emergency.
While Environment Canada said tornado warnings are in effect for:

- Lindsay
- Southern Kawartha Lakes
- Peterborough
- Lakefield
- Windsor
- Leamington
- Essex County

Dozens of residents in the area called the 680News room to describe all the damage, like this man.

"[...] There were power lines down - snapped in two - there was a strip mall that had its roof ripped off. But, the most interesting thing was a car dealership - it had about 50 brand new cars and all of the windows has been blown out," he said.

Meantime a police spokeswoman said Smith's Camp, a trailer park in the heart of Midland, was also hit by the storm.

There were reports up to a dozen people received injuries at the trailer park.

King Street and Highway 93 were shut down to motorists as a result of the severe weather conditions.

Emergency Management Ontario has advised people in the area of Minden to the north, Brock to the south, Ramara to the west and Havelock to the east to immediately seek shelter.

People not in those areas are being told to stay away until further notice.

The "red alert" will end at midnight.

Well, we're just a shake south of one of those, so we were probably in that area. We spent some time in the basement, but other than torrential rain, it was quiet.

Same here - it bucketed down rain all night. By tomorrow morning we'll have the official measurements in. So far this June - 103.2 mm of rain. During all of June last year - 30.4 mm.

No more rain today - just cloud. One sunny day tomorrow, rain, sun on Sunday then back to several days of rain & showers. Everything in the house feels damp. My gardens are loving it but that's about it.

Looking at this a bit late, but the info still stands.

If there is a warning for your area, secure your pets so that you can grab them and go. Put cats in carriers, put a leash on your dog and leave it on, so that you are not scrambling around trying to catch them. Plan NOW where is the best place to take shelter. If you have no storm cellar, get away from windows, go to the lowest level of your home, and get into an interior room with no windows. A basement, an understair closet (our own tornado refuge), or failing that, in the bathtub with a mattress over you. Anywhere that you can be sheltered from flying glass and with enough substantial construction that it is less likely to collapse on you.

An oncoming tornado DOES make a sound like a freight train. If you hear that, TAKE COVER IMMEDIATELY!

Twice now, here in Maryland, I've come much closer to tornadoes than I want to. Monday one touched down about a mile from here without warning. Several years ago one skipped over our backyard -- it's a good thing it was only an F1 and it's a BIG backyard! Twisted the tops off one neighbor's trees and threw them down in our yard, uprooted trees of the neighbors on the other side. Only damage we suffered (other than the mess) was an already-cracked window sucked out, and the roof pulled off the bird feeder -- and one of the two compartments being filled with dirt!

Take care, all.

LOVELIEST of trees, the cherry now / Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride / Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten, / Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score, / It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom / Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go / To see the cherry hung with snow.

If you're in an apartment, get into the central hallway. Lie down right where the floor meets a wall, facing the wall & drag a blanket or something out with you, you can use to cover up. That's especially worth contmplating if your unit is small & there's not a lot of distance between an exterior wall & the innermost part of your place. The more walls you can get between you & the effects of a twister, the better.

And the first thing I do if we get watches or warnings for any severe weather is PUT SHOES ON. If you have to bail and end up having to help people, protect your feet.

With possible tornadoes, most people head for the basement with a portable radio until the danger has passed. Sue, on the other hand, camps out in front of her living room window to get the best view of the disaster possible. Why am I not surprised?

Ought if we ever get serious WARNINGS as opposed to watches, rest assured I'm nowhere near the window.

If a watch pops up, I check out local radar & see what's developing. If the potential looks serious enough, (& here, they overwarn a tad), I make sure candles are ready to light, (after dark) & keep an eye out. My ID gets tossed into a little backpack & if conditions deteriorate, no matter how hot it is, I change into long pants & make sure I've got solid footwear.

Only a very few times have we had warnings of serious summer type weather, (hail, high winds & worse) & the most I've ever seen from that is horizontal funnel clouds, hail & torrential rain.

I love extreme weather events but I'm not crazy about getting hurt or doing anything stupid.

I'll admit, a 92" wide livingroom window does offer some spectacular view of the skies though. Even when the weather is normal, it's fun to lie back & watch the clouds drift by. Only thing I haven't yet seen here is an aurora. That will be spectacular from inside the comfort of our own home.
