Default Man went to space 50 years ago today

Yes he was a Soviet but he was the first to go beyond Earth's atmosphere.

Хорошая работа и поздравления, Юрий!

As someone has said, it is amazing we were able to pull ourselves from rickety air vehicles to space in only 2 generations.

Another pilot was the prime candidate for the mission. His name was German Titov but his name sounded to german...

Good old Yuri Aleksejevich Gagarin got the ride...great Russian name. Sorry about the spelling.

There's something cool about man (m/f) in space. And man on the moon. Sadly we stalled there.

We got some cool satellites though...

A hundred years from now, nobody will care at all about the things that we think are so important today. But every school kid will likely know the date that human beings first went into space, and first set foot on the Moon. These are truly important events that rate up there with milestones like man harnessing fire and learning to cultivate crops.

Not that we remember the dates of those too well.
