Default China: Space stations first 8.5 ton module launched

天宫一号 is the first Chinese space station, intended as a test-bed to develop the rendezvous and docking capabilities needed to support a larger space station complex. The launch of Tiangong 1, aboard a Long March 2F/G rocket, occurred on September 29, 2011. It is part of the Tiangong space station program, also known as Project 921-2, which aims to place a full-size, semi-permanent crewed space station into orbit by 2020

This is essentially their Skylab. It will not take them long to put up their version of the ISS down the road. Unlike us, the Chinese are serious and driven about space technology and gaining dominance.

Unlike us, they haven't run out of money yet AFAIK.

Neither have we. We are printing it like it is toilet paper.

Not bad on a US$500mil to US$1.5Bil budget.
They have a human rated launch vehicle, a capsule, space station and working on a probe with return from Mars

NASA has a US$17.5Bil budget.
No current human rated launch vehicle or capsule but have a space station shared with international partners including ESA.

ESA has about a US$5.5Bil budget.
No launch vehicle or capsule. Minority partner on space station.

RSA has about US$3.8Bil budget.
They have a human rated launch vehicle and capsule they use and sell to the Americans. Minority partner on the space station.

CNES (France) has a US$2.5Bil budget.
They have non-human rated launch vehicle but no capsule. Minority partner on space station.

Yes, I would say the Chinese are doing well.

Unless our private program gets going soon, I guess I am going to have to live vicariously through the Chinese. Not happy about it, but thems the facts.

More from the "you can't make this up" department:

"Rocket's red glaring error: China sets space launch to America the Beautiful"

"...To mark the launch, the Chinese space agency and China Central Television (CCTV) released a proud animation, set to rousing orchestral strains, of the "Heavenly Palace" thrusting skyward, lofting above the Earth and docking with a Shenzhou crew capsule.

The only problem being that the backing music in question is America the Beautiful – more or less an unofficial national anthem of the United States."

Somebody is gonna be in trouble!!

Above in a pic of their new station configuration.

Note additional docking ports on the connector module.

It's a beautiful melody even without the words. Quite ironic though, even if it was intentional.
