Container ship could break up.
The 47,000-tonne ship Rena was heading towards Tauranga New Zealand last Wednesday from Napier when it ran aground on a well known/marked reef at 17 knots carrying 1700 tonnes of fuel and 11 containers of dangerous goods among 1368 other containers.. Four contain the hazardous substance ferro-silicon which reacts with water.

Environment Minister Nick Smith says this is NZ's "worst maritime environmental disaster"
The ship hit the reef last Wednesday and oil is now washing up on the beaches around Tauranga where a big clean-up operation is under way.

Dr Smith said an environmental disaster was inevitable from the moment the ship hit the reef.
"It was the scale of it - a 47,000 tonne ship at 17 knots hitting a reef of that size - that meant the die was cast," he said.
"We were set for an environmental disaster from 2am on Wednesday."

The beach frontages where all the oil, toxic chemicals and flotsam is washing up is in front of multimillion dollar "Gold Coast/Malibu"type properties. A lot of well heeled folk are throwing tantrums....and rightfully so.
Not to mention damaged wetlands and birdlife.

Captain and 1st Mate under arrest.
Ship hit the well marked reef on the Captains 44th birthday. Rumors are circulating that there may have been celebrations before the wreck. I suspect that they are just rumors.

Huh, None of the photos of the Ship RENA shows any Flag but on the stern it says Monrovia..
Exile the crew to Somalia, serves them right.. A ship like that could avoided those reefs on auto
pilot alone, even without a crew..

Why can't they unload the containers and then the thing might float off the reef?

Rena UPDATE:
Oil Pumping on Rena is Slow but Steady
Friday, October 21, 2011 - 6:34PM
An estimated 350 tons of oil have spilled into the Bay of Plenty and drifted onto its pristine coast. The 60-tons pumped combined with what has been pumped earlier in the week makes only 171-tons of removed oil from 1,700 total aboard the Rena, according to Maritime New Zealand. 1,140-tons of oil still remain on the ship as the salvage crew work to empty the fuel tanks.

Interesting that the containers lock together so well vertically .
Apparently a horizontal locking mechanism might be useful although
I have no idea how they would align the containers.

Rena splits in two; pieces 30m apart
The Rena has split in two, with the pieces pushed 30 metres apart by the wild weather overnight.
Maritime New Zealand spokesman Ross Henderson said there had been a "significant" change in the ship's condition, though the pieces were still on the reef.
The forward section of the ship was in its original position on the Astrolabe reef off the Tauranga coast, while the stern had broken away and, while still on the reef, was moving siginificantly.
Henderson said the ship had been pounded by 6-metres swells and the bad weather was expected to continue for the next three to four days.
"There has been a significant discharge of containers and container debris from the ship. This may result in the 3nm [nautical mile] exclusion zone being extended.

Because the moment is has any freedom of movement at all, the waves will just drive it back up farther onto the reefs. When you have all that surface area for the waves to act against, a half-dozen powerful ocean tugs could not pull it off, even if it were safe for them to operate in amongst the reefs (which it is not).
