I feel drive. If I feel something, I drive away in a hurry.

Great. Something else to take your eyes off the road. I think I'll just keep rebuilding my nice simple truck till I croak.

After avoiding many attempts of drivers not looking while backing up, these cameras will be a waste of money to most drivers.

If you actually turn and look back, you will see not only what is behind you, but what is approaching from the sides.... like a kid running down the row of cars who is about to cross behind your car. On the other hand, a camera will reveal things too short to see over the tailgate of your pickup, SUV or minivan. Pros & cons.

To 06's point, I think if young drivers are taught to use the camera in conjunction with the other tools at their disposal (side mirrors, their own eyes and ears, etc) then the cameras will be a useful addition. If you end up just staring at that little screen only, they will cause as many problems as they solve. Peripheral vision is, IMHO, one of the most important tools in driving safely. Unfortunately not many people are taught how to maximise this tool.
