Under the program, a customer can report a stolen phone to his or her carrier. The carrier will load a unique identification number for the phone into a database, which will be checked by other carriers to see if the device is blacklisted.
Am I the only person who sees a MAJOR problem with this? How does the carrier know that the person reporting the theft is the owner?

I can see a disgruntled person who wishes to cause trouble for someone reporting a "stolen phone". Let's say that you have a fight with your SO. SO calls the carrier and reports that your phone has been stolen. Hey, presto, now you have no phone service! And if I'm reading the article right, with no way to get it turned back on.

LOVELIEST of trees, the cherry now / Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride / Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten, / Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score, / It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom / Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go / To see the cherry hung with snow.

Very simple. PIN assigned when you get the phone, have to have the PIN to report it.

If successful large sections of the US community may suddenly
go quiet .

More interesting is that the kind of people currently using stolen
phones may convert to phones with GPS position reporting .

"We know you are in there , come out with your hands up "

"We know you were in the area when ........ "

"We know you were/are in the stolen vehicle " .

Common sense is uncommon.

Just as the IRS knows when someone is using a stolen ss number, they do nothing about it
