Intel ISEF 2012 top winners announced!

Jack Andraka, 15, of Crownsville, Md. was awarded first place for his new method to detect pancreatic cancer at this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), a program of Society for Science & the Public. Based on diabetic test paper, Jack created a simple dip-stick sensor to test blood or urine to determine whether or not a patient has early-stage pancreatic cancer. His study resulted in over 90 percent accuracy and showed his patent-pending sensor to be 28 times faster, 28 times less expensive and over 100 times more sensitive than current tests. Jack received the Gordon E. Moore Award, of $75,000, named in honor of Intel co-founder and retired chairman and CEO.

Great for him and all the people this could save.

I'm suitably awed. This young man had to learn the biology; specifically the biochemistry of both the blood & urine & markers for the disease. He had to figure out ho to adapt current dipstick test methods - THEN manages to come up with a dual modality test that's more accurate than anything out there.

The cost savings are pretty significant as well.

He says his detectors can be used to detect various cancers including ovarian and lung cancer.

Sell it in the stores along with pregnancy tests and strips to test for ketosis.

But can you imagine if you got a false positive?

It's going to happen - flase positives. Do a second test with a test bought at a different location & if that turns out positive... get thee to your doc.

How does a fifteen-year-old do a 'study'? Kudos to him, but there's an adult or several behind this, I'd wager. At the very least, a great parent, teacher or sponsor.

Parents, teachers, etc. aren`t allowed to do more than offer suggestions, an open ear, and (in the case of parents)their wallets when the kids are entering the science fair.
Many kids have the same project over several years, improving/advancing as they go along.

Now, I would bet that this bright boy`s parents are researchers, scientists, maybe doctors, something that was able to spark his imagination.

Still quite a result.

I wonder how much innovation there has been in this field (sometimes nobody is interested because of costs).
