I'm in America and I am swimming in it anyway.

You can run but you can't hide.

I can't afford to immigrate to Australia so I am SOL and I am on the downhill side in this life.

If you are younger and have kids...

Pay attention or not. I am just a town crier.

I wonder how they doing in Japan, the glowing in the dark....not trying to be funny here.... might just help a bit, as i read somewhere all the nuclear power plants in japan have been shut down, turning of AC and street lights is not enough...

And now, it gets more interesting...

Guchol, a tropical cyclone in the western Pacific, is maintaining Super Typhoon status, and has its sight set on Japan. Winds currently exceed 150 mph, with even higher gusts, making Guchol a super typhoon, the highest classification for tropical cyclones in the western Pacific.

The projected path couldn't be any worse, IMO.

If Guchol were an Atlantic Hurricane, it would be considered a strong Category 4 storm.

To offer some comparison, when Katrina devastated LA and MS, it was a CAT 4 hurricane. After landfall it weakened but still spread massive rainfall, flooding numerous cities in its wake.

Guchol, is serious, made more because Japan is still under pressure from the ongoing effects of the massive quake a year.

My prayers for all those in the path of this typhoon.

And in case things aren't interesting enough, they just had a 6.4M EQ offshore of Honshu. There are multiple tremors in the 4-5+ range daily, but 6.4 is getting up there.

I wonder which part of typhoon will wreak the most damage at Fuku? All the radioactivity all over the ground and in the air will be very efficiently dispersed over the rest of Japan, including those southern areas which have so far received very little.

The winds are likely to cause power outages which should efficiently take out the cooling systems at work there, such as they are. There are flimsy plastic pipes running for Km out on the ground, exposed. It will be in the right quadrant of the storm, the worst place to be, and where tornadoes will likely spin off. Reactor 4 is on unstable ground and is itself unstable, top heavy with the SPF, walls sort of standing, at an angle...

54 foot waves around Guchol right now. I wonder if the shore defenses of Fuku could handle those? Didn't help during the tsunami....

Oh wait! Now there's been a 6.4 Northeast of Fuku, with stations around it reporting an intensity of 2 and even one 3.

Just gets better and better...

I think the rain will have a cleaning effect with much radioactive material
being washed out to sea .

As I recall a fuel pool was in danger of collapse , this could become
interesting .

The Bahamas are great for snorkeling. Should be safe for awhile, at least.

Default Guchol weakening, heading right over Fukushima

They've evacuated one town near there already.

We're able to monitor this from the relative safety of thousands of miles away, but I wonder how much coverage of this is being provided by the local media, to those in its path?

The evacuation makes sense so doubtful that would overly concern the locals. But is the media offering any information on the potential effects on Fukashima?

Glad this storm has weakened, that at least helps.By tracking over land, it doesn't have the potential to gather more strength. Much better than the original projected path that indicated it skirting along the coast, as it tracked north.

They'll have good coverage of the storm, but the MSM in Japan only rarely gets brave enough to buck the government and bring up Fukushima.

Here is the live cam that Tepco has focused on the reactors. It's already blowing really hard there.

Reactor 1 is the building closest to the camera. It is actually fitted with a "tent" and that tent is rated for 65 mph winds, max. The tent is actually panels fitted together to slow down the radiation leakage. Not stop it, just cut it down a little. Reactor 1 is extremely "hot", too hot to get near. The cranes that fitted the panels in place got dosed in the process but they are still sitting around the grounds there somewhere, no longer usable.

At any rate, the panel tent is vulnerable if the wind speed is too great.

Thanks, for the live link!!

True, the MSM isn't going to rock the boat, in Japan or here, for that matter, on the continuing problem with the radioactive leakage.

wind is shaking the camera pretty good right now, got to be blowing at least 30 knots right now...

Edit: Couldn't get the original camera link to work, but here's a view of Reactor 4...

It got pretty rough for awhile but it has passed on by and there is no visible damage, anyway. What is happening with the reactors themselves is another story. I saw several light flashes over Reactor 2 just during the short periods I was watching. Not lightning.

R 4 is still standing at least. The ground there is sinking since the eq/tsunami last year which doesn't help the stability of that tilting top heavy building.
