Hunh. i'm surprised, I've read 6/10 of the banned books.

Lucifer's Hammer will always be my favourite SF book. I have to check out Turtledove.

And Margaret Atwood is full of it. If she doesn't write SF, what was that god-awful book Oryx and Crake? I do not recommend it.

A Wrinkle in Time? Really? With all of the classic good vs evil messages? Do people even think before shooting off their mouths?

I have read the top 7. And count several of them among my all-time favorites.

Only 4 out of 10 (Orwell, Vonnegut, Huxley & Burgess).

Good.

Mordan has a point there, or if not written, not published, some of my best books i have are manuscripts written by various authors, unpublished, only shared to a few, if i think its the right moment, tho they newer leave my sight, read only in my presence.

We're going to have to agree to disagree, rb. I thought Atwood's Oryx and Crake was an absolutely brilliant commentary on society and what can happen if we continue on our current path. I have to confess, I've read it several times since it came out. The sequel, I wasn't as impressed with.

I completely agree about Lucifer's Hammer. My copy is well worn!

Define "score". How many we've read? Or how well the ones we've read rate on our own personal scale?

this site is all about sci-fi and fantasy books. There are great podcasts, videos and author interviews. I especially like it as one of the hosts is a woman and finding sci-fi crazy women like me is not so common.

This is awesomely cool. MY SD who for years refused to read so much as a cereal box is now into reading. We stopped at the library on the way home today so she could pick up books she had on reserve. Among them - The Giver & 1984. MY SD - reading THOSE? Wow. I hope she thoroughly enjoys them & wants more.

Cool List! Thanks Oric! I've only read 9 of the 25 - but does it count that I've read those 9 books countless times? I'm going to track some of them down!

I would have like to have seen Greg Bear's Darwin's Radio on the list. That's definitely one of my favorite sci-fi novels.

I scored the entire Ender trilogy at the second hand book store a couple of weeks to go to read while on a trip.

Ender's Game (surprise ending) is good but I am having trouble slogging through Xenocide.

Ender's Shadow about "Bean" is also good. I bet it was hard to go back and write a "companion" book from a different viewpoint of Ender's Game.

ANDREA! ORIC! Thought I was the only one that had read that. The sequel was okay but Darwin's Radio really got me THINKING.

Greg Bear is one of my favorite writers! I read Blood Music in the late 80's and it scared the living snot out of me. Since then, I've followed his writings. His works are a bit inconsistent but always enjoyable to read. I haven't reread any of his books in a long time but yesterday, we climbed North Dome in Yosemite and I couldn't help but think of one of the final scenes from The Forge of God, another great Greg Bear novel.

Thanks for posting that link, Oric. I think I need to immerse myself in the world of Greg Bear for a few weeks!

Another great novelist, who crosses a lot of genres is F. Paul Wilson. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE The Repairman Jack novels. Great fun!

Now reading Tony Ballantynes Twisted Metal which is a story about robot societies on what looks like a robot dominated world.

The robots have a clearer choice then humans. The woman robots finish the mind patterns of the young robots , the coding for their brains. In this world the state of Artemis is taking over all the other states.

Artemis was poor & had nothing so it build an army of interchangeable simple robots which went on to conquer. All the other states are examples of some strength or system.

Most are brushed over by the author and the Artemisian army (i suspect they're in it together).

The one little state getting some exposure is a stratisfied society. We follow a noble & a peasant on their steps in the Artemisian army.

Our heroes live in the one state were they belief in free minds, open cooperation.

When they come under attack they rely on their defence robots but hardly put up a fight. There's a parable there i guess.

Still have to read a bunch & will get back on this. Wonder how the robot legends will pan out, where it'll end etc.

The sun is finally out over here in Europe so i finished it in the park.

Can't tell too much about the later story but it ends with a pretty good cliffhanger.
I'll pick up the sequel soon.

The robots are sort of primitive in form & mind and in some ways too like humans. They have male & female versions. The females weave the mind out of material provided by the fathers. Patterns...What is the best mind?

We'll see in part 2.

Fun interview with Philip Palmer. I really like the degree in which some of his work is so over the top. He has a sort of different background then most writers too.
