Its a BIG ocean. Now that its been spotted, does the first one to it get to claim it for salvage?

I wonder why the Coast Guard did not just tow it to port?

AP tweets that "...US Coast Guard says it has unleashed cannon fire at a Japanese ghost ship set adrift by last year's tsunami".
It sounds so 18th Century.

The article I read said it had been designated for scrap before the tsunami. I'm guessing nobody wants to take on the cost of disposing of it.
