Default Wildfire Season 2012

It's started early and going strong so I thought it might be a good idea to have a consolidated thread to kind of keep track of them.

This is the most current list of "Large Fire Incidents" from the US Forest Service.

Day 6: Colorado wildfire - High Park Fire near Fort Collins now 49,763 acres, more than 118 structures destroyed, 1 dead, 10 percent containment

And a new fire, small so far but likely to spread.
"New wildfire west of Colorado Springs"

"A new wildfire has broken out on the Park/Teller county line, just west of Lake George, west of Colorado Springs."

We are heading to Denver in 2 weeks. Looks like I will have to get used to the smell of smoke again.

"Day 15: Colorado wildfire - High Park Fire near Fort Collins now 69,543 acres, 45 percent containment, 191 homes destroyed, 1 dead"

A new fire in Utah, called the Dump Fire, as it started in a landfill, has grown very quickly.

"Counterattack: Crews aim to snuff Utah wildfire, return evacuees home "

Quote:
"No flames were visible and smoke was diminishing Saturday morning as crews counterattacked a 4,148-acre wildfire that had forced the overnight evacuation of about 2,500 residents of the northern Utah towns of Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain.

The Dump Fire, ignited by sparks from target shooters in a northern Utah County landfill on Thursday afternoon, burned within a half-mile of homes before an army of local, state and federal firefighters turned the blaze back into more remote grasslands and mountain ridges of juniper and pinyon late Friday. The firefighters were assisted by a fleet of water-bearing helicopters and air tankers bombing the flames with fire retardant.

...In addition to keeping a close eye on flames possibly shifting back toward populated areas, 400 firefighters on Saturday focused on keeping the fire from encroaching on four critical electricity transformers in Israel Canyon. If those go down, officials said, the whole region could lose power.

...The Dump Fire was the 20th this year blamed on target shooters. Overall, there have already been 400 wildfires in Utah; 380 of them human-caused."

Additional fires in both CO and UT started over the weekend.

"Wildfires burn across Colorado, Utah; force more than 10,000 from homes"

Quote:
...The developments are unwelcome news for firefighters who are battling tens of thousands of acres of wildfires in Colorado and neighboring Utah.

The infernos prompted the evacuations of some 11,000 people in and around Colorado Springs on Sunday after the 3,600-acre Waldo Canyon Fire began there a day earlier. The Waldo Canyon Fire was 0% contained late Sunday. More than 13,000 residences are being threatened, although no structures have been lost and no injuries have been reported, authorities said.

Six other wildfires were active in the state, according to the Colorado Division of Emergency Management.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, who traveled to the Waldo Canyon Fire on Sunday, said 70 helicopters and tankers were in the air over Colorado to help crews battle the flames.

"Almost half the airborne fire suppression in the country is in Colorado," the governor said. "We recognize this is going to take a big push."

The largest of the fires was the High Park Fire, which began June 9 and has now consumed 83,205 acres, the U.S. Forest Service said. It was 45% contained Sunday.

...In neighboring Utah, where the weather was also hot, dry and windy, at least two wildfires were burning Sunday. FEMA is providing funds to help fight the Wood Hollow Fire, which grew to 10,000 acres since starting Saturday afternoon, the Sanpete County Sheriff's Office said Sunday.

There were evacuation orders in place for parts of the county, about 50 miles south of Salt Lake City. The sheriff's office could not say how much of the fire was contained.

West of Provo, the Dump Fire had grown to more than 6,000 acres and was 40% contained, officials said.

I forget the exact numbers - I only was half listening as I cleaned but CNN was reporting an unbelievable amount of equipment in Colorado including a frightening percentage of the nation's water bombers.

I put Wildfires in Breaking News and will try to keep up with coverage. Looks like it is spiraling wildly out of control at this point.

Big fire here yesterday. 550 acres burned about 10 miles from us. Firetrucks had trouble finding water to use on the fire but they finally got it under control.

Governor of Idaho has declared a state disaster to support firefighting efforts across the state. Update on specific fires at the link below.

Idaho Statesmen:

Quote:
Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter declared a state disaster today to support firefighting efforts across Idaho, according to a release issued late Wednesday afternoon.

The declaration provides the means necessary for the Idaho Department of Lands to utilize its agreement with the Idaho National Guard to provide support to fire incident management teams.

The Idaho Emergency Operations Center, housed at the Idaho Bureau of Homeland Security, is activated and will be issuing mission assignments to the Guard for their support.

Elmore County has requested that Bureau of Homeland Security pursue assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to support protection of threatened communities near the Trinity Ridge Fire.

With the fire moving toward residences and businesses, fire and county officials are seeking to have structure protection assets in place...

Reading it all in one report makes me realize just how bad it really is this year.

"2012 on pace as worst year for wildfires"

Quote:
"Wildfires have charred nearly 7 million acres so far this year — destroying more acreage across the USA in the first eight months of any year since accurate records began in the early 1960s, say federal fire officials.

This is an area larger than Maryland.

The combination of the very hot summer and the worst drought since the Dust Bowl are providing fuel for the fires, says Ken Frederick, a public affairs specialist with the Bureau of Land Management at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise.

He says that as of Tuesday, 39 large fires are burning, almost all in the West.

Wildfires earlier this year have included the largest in Oregon since the 1840s, the largest fire on record in New Mexico, and the most destructive fire in Colorado's history, the National Climatic Data Center reports.

...As of the end of July, eight firefighters have died this year in wildfire incidents, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency."
