Gastric bypass surgery reverses diabetes in many obese patients, but the disease returns in about one-fifth of them within three to five years, a new study finds.

So the sum amount of fat you carry is the issue, as each fat cell adds it's bit to the sum total of inflammatory cytokines in your circulating? And is getting rid of your fat, by which ever means, the goal. or not?

I don't think we know yet. It was a big surprise to have people stop being diabetic as we define it right after surgery-even before weight was lost.
Now finding the insulin problems come back after a few years and that the risk of that happening goes up if the person was diabetic for more than 5 years...

What this really means is 'we don't actually understand enough about type 2 diabetes yet, and we are still learning.'

It may also become a push for overweight people to have surgery sooner to try to stop them from becoming diabetic, or to have the surgery within the first year or two, not wait till after 5 years.....
