The transition from civil war to a secure, stable Libya remains slow and difficult and dealing with the militia problem is one of the key challenges ahead, our correspondent adds.

It is likely that Libya will end up being a fractured state. Possibly even leading to a series of small "civil wars."
This kind of activity might also happen to Syria should it collapse.

I am expecting Iraq to end up as three different states, and be better for it.

If all the Middle East fractured into their respective cultural and geographical states, the empire's managers will have an easier time on their job. The British were once really good at this game.

The Middle East is a mix of national, ethnic and tribal entities. The Persians, Kurds and others are distinct ethnic groups. There are many Turkic groups; some of which retain a tribal identity, others that have a cultural identity (like the Pashtuns), and Turkey, which has a national identity. The Arabs are broken up primarily on tribal lines, except for the 'Palestinians', which are an amalgamation of Arab indigenous residents and (mostly) tribeless, stateless Arab refugees from all over the Middle East. Then there is the Jewish state, which is ethnically and racially diverse, and defined by a religious/cultural identity. And, of course, various Xn and other smaller non-Muslim religious groups within these groups. Sorting it all out, especially considering the greatly overlapping territories of each group in most cases, would be quite the nightmare. And anyways, it is up to the people of the region to sort out their own borders. Because America is in fact a non-imperialist nation, Iraqis will be sorting that out for themselves.

Thousands rally in Libya against autonomy for east

It is looking like Libya might split into two separate nations.
