August Fishing
Today I got a chance to go. Max offered to hold down the fort and I got to go inner-tube fishing with a girlfriend. As the crow flies the spot we fished at is maybe 4 or 5 miles from here. About halfway there it started to rain and lightning. I had check the radar and it just looked like spotty pop up storms. At the fishing hole the storm had passed, it was overcast with occaisional light rain. We geared up and in we went. It was wonderful! Just a little action and my friend landed a nice bream. Seconds after that there was more lightning and we decided to get off the water. Now what? There's a pavillion at this little slice of heaven next to the river in a hidden valley. If we had brought our instruments and had some catfish bait we could play music and catfish.... So we made it so. I went to get instruments and she went to get bait.
We baited our poles (2 each) and put a bobber on the tip of the pole so we could see if we had any bites. The poles were secured and we went to play music. It rained quite a bit off and on. It was lovely. Every so often we'd get a nibble and go running down to the river to check. We got several nibbles and had to replace our bait a few times then I got a bite. I raced to my pole and caught it just as it slid past the bench it was propped against (it was anchored with a log on the ground as well). Whatever it was it felt like it was pretty good sized. The fight began. I could tell it was big and it was probably a catfish but then all of a sudden it stopped fighting and it was as though I had hooked a stump. No movement at all, odd. So I eased up on my line to give it a little space and waited. Sure enough it got free and I was able to reel it closer. I could see it through the murky water and it was definitely good sized. As I got it close it came out of the water....
It was a BIG TURTLE! Our guess was around 10 pounds. Now what. I thought about Max and wished he was there. He would be one to take care of the situation and this one looked like a keeper. I had no way to bring him in and eventually lost him in the struggle. What fun.
We fished awhile longer then headed for home. I drove in rain to within a couple of miles of home. By the time I got home the road was all dust. We didn't get but a drop or two here! In all it was a great day!
