Ariz. police say they are prepared as War College warns military must prep for unrest; IMF warns of economic riots

The bit that jumped out of the page at me was this:

Imagine “a new era of containment with the United States as the nation to be contained” where the principal tools and methods of war involve everything but those associated with traditional military conflict. Imagine that the sources of this “new era of containment” are widespread; predicated on nonmilitary forms of political, economic, and violent action; in the main, sustainable over time; and finally, largely invulnerable to effective reversal through traditional U.S. advantages.

This was never a prospect in my opinion until GWB came along, and Obama is going to have to work very hard to make this one recede quickly.

Having once lived near this Army War College and associated with a few of the military people there, I'm not at all surprised to see a report like this one. It's their job to study and do think tank type scenarios that would in any way impact the security of the US. I don't find the report to be shocking or even an indication that it's anything other than a reasoned awareness of possible complications within an array of possibilities. There very well may be teams that have put together response plans, in fact I would suppose that they have. As Bird G said, that's what they do. They do some very forward thinking there at the WC and they do it with the most amazing up-to-date technology. For the lovely serene campus that it is (I often went for walks there), there's a very high powered hum underneath the surface.

The unsteady world economy may produce escalating economic related unrest and riots in various parts of the world. There might even be looting in some big US cities at some point, just like there was after the race riots in the 1960s and the NYC blackout in 1977. I just don't think that we're anywhere near where we have to have the Arizona police get ready to respond to this type report from the War College.

We have the Navy version here on the left coast at the Presidio of Monterey.

Some of the talks are even open to the public. Very interesting stuff.
