Default Tutorial: How to post a picture

OK, let's say that your daughter has just made you a yummy sandwich and you want to share a picture of it in the Kitchen forum but you don't know how. What do you do? Well let me walk you through it...

First - you're going to want to find a way to store your photo online. There are a number of free sites online that allow you to do this. I use ImageShack and Photoshack a lot, but there are plenty of others as well (Flickr is another popular one). You don't always need to set up an account for photo sharing sites but it does give you a bit more control (eg. you can delete photos if you decide you don't want them displayed anymore, you can easily re-find photos if you want to reuse them later, and you don't have to worry about your photo going MIA).

As an aside - you sometimes may come across pics on the Web that you like. I also personally prefer to host my own copy of those pictures as well - some sites don't like people directly linking to pictures on their site to they disable remote linking to their pictures and you'll end up with a error message (or worse) displayed if you try to do so.

Anyhow, back to the tutorial.

I've taken a picture of my yummy sandwich and stored it on my PC. I then decide to go to ImageShack to post it. Their site it at http://imageshack.us/

The initial load screen looks as follows:

Since I'm loading the original picture from my PC I'll need to click on the browse button to find the photo. If I wanted to copy it from a URL I'd click the "url" button and then paste the web location of the picture into the box instead.

Browse to the folder you've stored the photo at on your PC & select the right photo. It will return the name of the photo you're going to upload.

Click the big upload button. The photo starts to upload:

When the photo is successfully uploaded you'll get a new window that will display the url to the photo you've hosted. Copy the location from the "Direct Link" as you will need it when you create your post.

Now to post the photo on Blue Marble.

Either start a new thread or click on the reply button in an existing thread. You'll see a bunch of icons above the box where you compose your message. The one you want is the one I've circled in red:

Click on that icon and a pop-up window will be displayed:

Paste in the location of the picture you hosted:

Once you click the "OK" button you'll be returned to the message composition window. You can see that you photo's address has been wrapped with code on either side of it. That code is what is needed to display the photo in your message.

As a side note, you can also type this all directly without having to go through the icon. It doesn't matter if it's uppercase or lowercase. You do need to use the square brackets, however, and you can't have spaces in the code you're typing.

Type in any additional text you want in your message and submit your message.

Another side note: Blue Marble does an automatic resize of photos displayed in this manner. Other sites may not, however, so when you display pictures on them you may wish to resize the photo when you are initially hosting it. You would choose the resize option prior to you actually uploading your photo.

Also note that you can display photos in the same manner if you like using the "Quick Reply" feature:

The other method for attaching a photo is to directly link it in your message. The issue with attachments, however, is that there are some limits on the size of the pictures that can be embedded so you may have to resize the picture you stored on your PC. The benefit, however, is that you don`t need to bother with the image hosting step.

To attach photos instead you would enter your message and then scroll down to the additional options area:

Click the "Manage Attachments" button and a pop-up window will be displayed:

First click the browse button to find and select your photo. Then click the "Upload" button:

The site will proceed to upload your photo:

Your photo will be listed in the "Current Attachments". Multiple photos can be added. You can also remove them as well from the list.

Close the pop-up window and then submit your message and see the results...

Now, how do you shrink it so it doesn't take up the whole parking lot????

Hmmm, I noticed that the picture was initially a bit big but then the BM software kicked in and did the automatic resize. Is that not happening for you?

To fix that I'd then need to re-upload the pic in a resized format and post the link to the resized photo instead. You can specify height/width options when you include a photo in a html page you build but I don't know if you can/how you would when displaying it in a post on a board.

In order to resize it during the upload phase you just choose the size you want to convert it to prior to clicking the "Upload" button.

Thank you for the info, but uh, I'm with Auburn Boy. Perhaps you could post the recipe as well? I'm a little irked with the DH right now, perhaps I could make him that for lunch tomorrow?!?
