They seem to have a lot of technical glitches when the markets are roiled, don't they?

Trading Halted On New York Stock Exchange

Quote:

The New York Stock Exchange has suspended trading this morning. The exchange says it "temporarily halted" trading as of 11:32 a.m. ET, but did not elaborate on the reason.

About an hour earlier the exchange said there was a technical issue that had been resolved.

The exchange says all open orders at the time of the shutdown will be cancelled.

We'll update this post with new developments.
If this truly is a "technical glitch" the New York Stock Exchanges needs to start talking NOW before people get too worked up about this.

Trading glitches happen, as the order-routing algorithms are now extremely complicated, with scores of different complex order types that can interact with each other in unexpected ways.

However, it is a helluva coincidence that the WSJ was apparently hacked (and also United airlines computers went down systemwide), all within a couple hours of each other. Anyway, we should know soon. The NYSE can't stay down for long without a panic ensuing.

BREAKING NEWS: New York Stock Exchange halts trading
Quote:
Halt started at 11:32am and NYSE says it was triggered by 'technical issues'
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...s-trading.html

Quote:
The New York Stock Exchange is currently halting all trading, for reasons not yet announced.

The halt started at 11:32am and was triggered by 'technical issues,' the NYSE said in a statement

'We’re currently experiencing a technical issue we’re working to resolve as quickly as possible,' the statement reads, adding that 'additional information will follow as soon as possible.'

The Department of Homeland Security has also issued a statement about the shutdown, saying there is currently 'no sign of malicious activity'.

The halt comes on the same day that United Airlines flights around the country were grounded due to a nationwide technical issue on their own network.

The Wall Street Journal newspaper's website homepage has also broken down, and only displays an error message.

Traders on the floor say they were handed out a piece of paper this morning before trading, with a list of 'possibly problematic' stocks, according to CNN. Some of those stocks include Korea Electric Power and American companies like Kate Spade and Nordstrom.

However, it's unclear if that list has anything to do with the ongoing trading shutdown.

Unfortunately, the NYSE is now very fragile, because of the new combination of complex order flow and high-frequency trading. It has had dozens of glitches in the last few years. But they never last long.

Not sure if the NYSE COULD be hacked, as it is not directly connected to the internet as far as I know. All orders have to be routed through a member firm. But we'll see..

It may well be (I hope IT IS, in fact) a for-real technical glitch.

But when taken in the context of the China and Greece problems they need to be out in front talking to people rather than making them wait... and wonder... what the real problem may be.

Bloomberg is updating this story: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articl...all-securities.

Other stock exchange venues across the country seem to be trading normally so it may be the NYSE really is a glitch.

Edited to add:

The Wall Street Journal site is partially up again.

FBI has just announced, through the NYSE that they need take no investigative action - leads me to think it is strictly a technical issue.

Arguably, an internal technical failure at the NYSE is worse news than a hack attack. It means the NYSE doesn't know what it's doing, at some level.

After all, this is the same organization that caused the flash-crash, and never really figured out why that happened.

Trading Halted on NYSE

http://onlinedr.wsj.com/dr/2015/07/0...alted-on-nyse/

Quote:
Buying and selling of NYSE-listed stocks was still taking place on electronic venues, including the NYSE’s Arca exchange.

In recent trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 208 points, or 1.2%, at 17568. The S&P 500 was down 27 points, or 1.3%, at 2054. The Nasdaq Composite was down 73 points, or 1.5%, at 4924.

The NYSE issued an update notifying traders of the problem at 11:32 a.m. New York time. “We’re currently experiencing a technical issue that we’re working to resolve as quickly as possible,” a representative of the exchange said in an email. “We are doing our utmost to produce a swift resolution, communicate thoroughly and transparently, and ensure a timely and orderly market re-open.

A technical glitch was registered ahead of the U.S. stock market’s open but was apparently resolved before shares began trading at 9:30 a.m.

Separately, the Nasdaq said in a statement that it is “operating normally and we are able to trade tape A securities (NYSE-listed companies).”
Increasingly appears to be a technical glitch of some sort, but the timing is also becoming increasingly curious with some of the other failures that have been occurring today.

Edited to add:

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-w...stock-exchange
Quote:
The NYSE was not the only large institution to experience computer glitches today. United Airlines instituted a ground halt for a time this morning, which it blamed on "connectivity issues." The halt has since been lifted and flights have resumed.

The Wall Street Journal's website was also down.
The Wall Street Journal site is partially up again, American Airlines is back up, NYSE still down.
