Default Total Solar Eclipse 2017 - US

Total Solar Eclipse 2017: When, Where and How to See It (Safely)

By Mike Wall, Space.com Senior Writer | January 6, 2017 07:00am ET

On Aug. 21, 2017, American skywatchers will be treated to a rare and spectacular celestial show — the first total solar eclipse visible from the continental United States in nearly four decades.

Next year's "Great American Total Solar Eclipse" will darken skies all the way from Oregon to South Carolina, along a stretch of land about 70 miles (113 kilometers) wide. People who descend upon this "path of totality" for the big event are in for an unforgettable experience, said eclipse expert Jay Pasachoff, an astronomer at Williams College in Massachusetts.

"It's a tremendous opportunity," Pasachoff told Space.com. "It's a chance to see the universe change around you."

Yep, we will. The area pinpointed as the absolute best for viewing is about 15 miles from here. It's a very small town and it will be interesting to see what will happen if a bunch of people visit in order to get a front-row seat.

We'll be watching from home. I'm just hoping it won't be cloudy.

Yep, it will be party time! BYO camper. BYOB. Carnivores to the right of the driveway and non-carnivores to the left, and GF's in the front yard. BYO instruments for a giant jam session with DH.

You won't have a problem recognizing your hostess. I'll be the one wearing the full bio-suit protection.

I told my DD that we need to plan a road trip.

Maybe, I can talk her into it.
