Thomas Jefferson's veg garden
Interesting article and the book sounds fascinating. I'm going to keep an eye out for it at the library.

I've always enjoyed reading about Thomas Jefferson's gardens. I'm always inspired. Oh to have the work force to accomplish that level of gardening. Alas, we will just have to make do with the two of us and keep things on a much smaller scale LOL

Went to Monticello, as I'm interested in Thomas Jefferson. Their duplication of his gardens are quite beautiful as is Monticello.
Will see if the library can order this book.

I got to reading that book before I went to sleep this morning. There was a lot of slave labor used to keep up that garden back in the days. No wonder that garden could be kept so large. Jefferson's daughter Martha complains at one point, " Old George (enslaved gardener) is so slow that by the time he has got to the end of his labour he has it all to do over again." ("A Rich Spot of Earth," Peter J. Hatch, page 22)
Talking about slaves and their gardens (pages 64/65):
Francis Taylor developed a labor arrangement with his slaves, giving them time off to plant their own potato patches after planting his. In 1799 he recorded how the "Negroes finished digging Irish potatoes in morning, and went about Digging their own--and finished them next day."
