A strain of E.coli found in the DNA of chickens that were fed antibiotics while alive are being spread to humans, causing bladder infections that are extremely difficult to treat, according to researchers.

In the DNA???
This sounds suspiciously like the majority of raw chicken handlers are women who need to wash better before going to the bathroom.

Shocking headline, but these quotes are burried in the story:

There has not been any specific study to prove the researchers' theory because it would mean purposely infecting healthy women.

The exact connection to the chicken people eat and bladder infections may be impossible to fully establish because it's not a typical food-related illness.
|
Maybe people are giving it to the chickens...

Ok, what they are really saying is that the DNA of the E.Coli is the same in both women with bladder infections and the chickens tested. Not in the DNA of the chicken. Thats just bad reporting.

Also they suggest that this strain sets up shop in your gut after eating the chicken and eventually ends up in your bladder. If the chicken is cooked thoroughly that shouldn't be a problem. If the counter and work surface is properly cleaned after working with the raw chicken that shouldn't be a problem either. Cross contamination is definitely something that could be a problem. The fact that its mainly in women suggests to me a combination of poor hygiene in the kitchen and bad wiping habits in the bathroom. Bladder infections are difficult to treat because its difficult for antibiotics to make it through the system and end up in urine. I don't understand why they couldn't do some sort of insert via catheter to deliver antibiotics to the bladder.

Women get more urinary tract infections because they have short urethras—bacteria can ascend into the bladder more easily. Many antibiotics are excreted by the kidney and therefore concentrated in urine, making UTIs actually easy to treat (e.g., with single dose trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim)), unless there is antibiotic resistance. Chickens are given low dose quinolones (e.g., Cipro), which is insane in terms of public health as these are highly potent and useful antibiotics, and often considered the gold standard drugs for UTIs.
