Pote, find a knitter who REALLY love you. lol
There's a link to someone who sold the hats on Etsy but she quit because it was just too work intensive. I can understand that. It looks like it takes 750 yards of yarn (correction... need two skeins at $14.95 each) so roughly $30 just for the materials... and an average of two weeks to knit it all up and assemble. Knitting up the icord "brain" matter takes a lot of dexterity and does not go as fast as flat knitting... and there's miles of that stuff that then has to be pinned and sewn to the base cap.
Etsy has a few modified versions made from chunkier yarn and not as anatomically correct... the closest one is selling for $250! http://www.etsy.com/search/handmade/...& min=0&max=0

You know, making that cord is really easy to do with what we call a Strickliesl. It is actually a toy for children here. If you can't buy them in the U.S., it would be easy enough to make one. I have a video of how to use one from YouTube. You can turn off the sound unless you understand German, and just watch and see how easy it is to do.

MH, I have seen both. We have them here too. The pattern calls for fingering weight but the machines take a thicker yarn, so I am pretty sure that is what the Etsy sellers must be using. I'll read some of the posts from people who have made the hat to see if they are using the icord makers or doing it by hand.

Okay... found one person with a nice hat who used the second icord maker you show, MH. She doubled the fingering weight yarn to get right size for the icord maker. I'll check JoAnns this weekend and see if they have it in stock, and if so play around with it a bit.

I bought the icord maker. You need a fluffy yarn that is less than worsted weight... it didn't work well with crochet cord or heavy yarns... but when it DID work, it did a really nice job.
More experimentation...

I had one eons ago (remember,I`m old) made out of a empty wooden spool from thread, and 4 nails. I made yards of those tubes. don`t remember making anything out of them, but did keep me quiet, and occupied.

OK, what happens here?
You knit the cap then make these tubes and stitch them on in a pattern?
I guess I could buy the knitted cap, then find matching color yarn, make the tubes with the machine and stitch it together.

... working on it. I used a thicker yarn - worsted instead of fingering weight. Even so, the icord I made looks thinner than in the pictures.
Yes, it is sitting on a soccer ball which is sitting in a soup bowl.
It was a PITA trying to get a long length out of the icord maker, and the pattern (which I purchased specifically to get the length needed) doesn't say how much... just, make as much as you need. So I may have to fiddle with that a bit.
Dunno when I'll get to assemble it. It looks like that will take a while.
