Black Dogs Considered Harder to Adopt

For whatever reason, black dogs and cats are adopted less often than other animals in local shelters.


"Depending on lighting, they are more difficult to see in their kennels and for that reason, they are often overlooked," says the Animal Defense League's Hugo Vital.

The ADL is holding a Black Pet Adoption event this weekend.

"While they may lack some of the colorings that some of the other animals may have, they are just as smart, loving and as adoptable."


Many experts say black dogs, espeiially short-haired black dogs, are considered meaner.

Likewise, black cats have that spooky, Friday the 13th stigma.

Other explinations include that a dog's natural dark eyes are obscured by a black coat, making it harder to a dog to transmit love and loyalty to a person.

Prices for adopting black cats and dogs are being reduced for the event which will be held at the ADL facility on Nacogdoches road all day today.
