Default Kayaks and Canoes .

A few months ago I bought an old kayak . I deliberately bought an
old one because I felt there was probably a bit to learn about the
best choice for me and that sooner or later after a little experience
I may want to upgrade to something better .
I think it quite likely that I will eventually own several different types
for use in different circumstances .

Sadly the combination of winter and an injury to my shoulder/back
meant that I have only been out in my kayak once .

Now mostly recovered and waiting for warmer weather I am already starting
to imagine a transition to something better . So I have started
this collection of alternative equipment and the features available .

And yes I am looking forward to summer .

I do not really want a fishing kayak but am bemused by
the range of features and do-dahs available on some of them .

More detail here .

I do however like the Hobbie feet powered paddle-fins type system
but worry they could be damaged in shallow water or even cause structural
damage if you hit bottom . Perhaps my fears will be allayed by an inspection .
Not very happy with how high you sit though and the one shown below
is not long enough for efficient passage through the water.

My experience so far suggests an upgrade to ......

# Definitely want a rudder
# Want one that is safer in troubled waters ( easier to recover from a capsize ) .
Frankly the one I have now is potential a killer for an old guy like me .
# Prefer to make use of the wind when I can ( optional small sail and outrigger(s) )
# A canoe trailer rather than transporting on vehicle roof .

Ooops , I forgot , must have room for a dog .

.

It sounds like what you really need is a paddle boat.

The ones we have around here can be propelled by one person, and then you can take your dog along for the ride. There are also paddle boats with a canopy so you and the dog won't fry your brains out in summer. Even with a built in cooler.

It also has a mount for holding your fishing pole. Check out the pictures if you don't believe me.

Put camo netting over the paddle boat. No one will be the wiser for it.

I have a Native Kayak and I love the tri-hull stability of it. They also make a foot paddle propelled model with a terrific design. There are all kinds of gadgets you can add. Mine has the anchor trolley system and its terrific for fishing!

I have friends with a peddle pontoon boat that uses a propeller system like the Native and disassembles easily without tools for transport. I'll try to find an example but in the mean time take a look at this:

Thanks BG but I think I will stick to Kayaks .

I have just been checking a large inland water body ( large by Australian
standards anyway ) and I thinking it is a good place for in initial short 1 or
2 day exploratory trip .
