Arrow Dark chocolate may protect from the effects of stroke

Dark chocolate high in epicatechin may protect against brain damage caused by stroke if consumed before stroke occurrence. Not all dark chocolate retains it's epicatechin during processing, so that quality is important. Testing in mice showed less brain damage from ischemic stroke if given epicatechin, which naturally occurs in dark chocolate, 90 min. before a stroke. Researchers are still not sure how much epicatechin is necessary to provide protection. It may be that very little is required. Sylvain Doré, Ph.D. said, ""Epicatechin itself may not be shielding brain cells from free radical damage directly, but instead, epicatechin, and its metabolites, may be prompting the cells to defend themselves."

I assume it would also offer some protection against brain
damage due to heart attack or other trauma that reduces blood
supply . Even drowning ?

So this means I must eat some dark chocolate at least every 90 minutes for proper health and protection, no?

I'm still waiting for the news that butter and sugar are actually good for you, and that the ideal breakfast is stickybuns.

there was another paper in 2011 about chocolate:

2011: Chocolate consumption is inversely associated with prevalent coronary heart disease:
the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Family Heart Study.

meanwhile (2015) this was cited by 7 pubmed central articles

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed?l...uid=206 55129

2015:Association of ideal cardiovascular health and calcified atherosclerotic plaque in the
coronary arteries: the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Family Heart Study.
There was a strong inverse relationship between number of ideal CVH (cardiovascular health)
metrics and prevalent CAC (coronary arteries calcium)

Candy consumption patterns, effects on health, and behavioral strategies to promote
moderation: summary report of a roundtable discussion.
[no conclusion]

2013: Magnesium intake is inversely associated with coronary artery calcification:
the Framingham Heart Study.
In community-dwelling participants free of cardiovascular disease, self-reported magnesium intake was inversely associated with arterial calcification

Mechanisms for food polyphenols to ameliorate insulin resistance and endothelial
dysfunction: therapeutic implications for diabetes and its cardiovascular complications.
[no conclusion]

2012: Cocoa intake and arterial stiffness in subjects with cardiovascular risk factors.
In subjects with some cardiovascular risk factors, cocoa consumption does not imply
improvement in the arterial stiffness values.

Actually, the ideal breakfast starts with a good cup of tea. Everything else is secondary and comes afterward.
