Default Fun & Hijinx in Home Repair

So lately I am having some long-overdue (and expensive, alas) home repair done so this stuff has been on my mind a lot lately.

I was grumbling about the surprises being found every time some never before exposed part of my house was laid bare until I read this:

2,000 families can finally return home after Army experts defuse metre-long 500lb WW2 bomb after working for 24 hours in the basement of a London house
Quote:
Police were called to Bethnal Green, east London, yesterday afternoon
2,000 residents were evacuated and many spent night in a nearby school
Army bomb disposal experts worked for 24 hours to defuse the weapon
A commander said it could have caused 'mass destruction' and was more dangerous than when it was dropped on London 70 years ago
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...se-weapon.html

Removed: Soldiers pictured taking away a Second World War bomb
from the London house where it was found

Quote:
he bomb was found by contractors at a building site in Temple Street yesterday afternoon.

The Army unit had been working since 6pm to assess the bomb, while residents and businesses were taken outside of the 'hazard zone'.

Witnesses at the scene said they had been told the bomb is a metre long and was found buried underground as builders were working in the basement of a home.
A seventy year old (and unstable) 500lb bomb in the basement rather puts the cheap shortcuts that contractors pull into perspective!

Holy crap! Scary night - housed with a lot of strangers & desperately hoping you don't hear a distant "boom!".

Makes sense, Pote. Why else would they be digging in a basement? It wouldn't be because they needed a tornado shelter.

Looks more like it arrived via the Germans, went into the ground, and wasn't removed at that time. If you look at the diagram/map at the link, it was smack dab in the middle of the bombed area.

I meant (and I thought Pote meant) that it was a survivalist having a shelter installed in his basement that caused it to be discovered. Not that a survivalist put it there!

I wonder how many contractors who go around tapping on old iron tanks with a hammer to see if they are full of fuel oil or water or can be broken up easy have read this?
