Unfortunately this is yet another pathogen that was relatively rare in the heterosexual population, but then got into the MSM (men who have sex with men - a euphemism for gay men) population and exploded. Many MSMs are on the "down low" and spread it around to their female partners. So here we are with another STD that would not have been a problem but for extremely irresponsible behavior among gay men. Of course, it is very un-PC to say any of this, so the problem has a 0% chance of being dealt with anytime soon.
To put things in perspective, in the urban MSM population, the prevalence easily exceeds 10%. It's utter madness.
