Default Wild Fires Destroy Thousands of Acres in OK, KS and TX

http://wildfiretoday.com/2017/03/09/...ma-and-kansas/

[ARTICLEThe Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management reported on Wednesday that the NW Oklahoma Complex of Fires had significant growth during the previous 24 hours. The three fires in that complex are:

Starbuck (Beaver and Harper County in Oklahoma, plus, in Kansas, Meade, Comanche, Clark Counties) – 715,484 acres total in Oklahoma and Kansas;
Selman (Harper and Woodward County, Oklahoma) – 47,289 acres; and,
283 Fire (Harper County, Oklahoma) – 71,168 acres
An Oklahoma Forest Service Type 3 Incident Management Team (IMT) has been assigned to the fires but an order has been placed for a Type 1 IMT, which is the largest and most highly qualified type of IMT.][/ARTICLE]

Max is in the middle of this and the damage done is incredible. Thousands of animals died in these fires. The devastation is horrific. He said there were 60 mph winds associated with it.

A Smithfield Foods hog farm in Laverne, Oklahoma, was devastated following the recent fires that left the Oklahoma panhandle charred. While animals were lost in the fire, no employees were harmed.

"At Smithfield Foods, the safety and wellbeing of our employees continues to be our highest priority as we recover from the wildfires," Kathleen Kirkham, Smithfield Foods' Director of Corporate Communications, said in an email with the current company statement on the event. "While we are deeply thankful that no employees were harmed in the fire, we lament the unnecessary loss of animals and the devastation to the surrounding community."

The operation houses approximately 45,000 sows total, split among two 10,000 sow farms and multi-site farms in the area, however the number of hogs lost in the fires has not yet been determined.

Only a few were saved.

Cattle graze with a background of smoke from wildfires near Hutchinson, Kan., Tuesday, March 7, 2017. Fires raged in parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado, and warnings that conditions were ripe were issued for Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska. The fire warning came after powerful thunderstorms moved through the middle of the country overnight, spawning dozens of suspected tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.(AP Photo/Orlin Wagner)

At least a dozen wildfires burning in Colorado, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Florida have charred more than 1,700 square miles and remain largely uncontained.

Rachel Hubbard of member station KOSU in Oklahoma City, Okla., reported at least six people have died in the wildfires:

"The flames have forced thousands from their homes over the last two days and some highways remain closed because the smoke is so thick that it can be seen in satellite images. Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and Kansas face extreme fire danger as low humidity, drought conditions and strong winds persist.
"Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback is calling in help from other states to relieve firefighters, and Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin has declared a state of emergency. Officials have not made damage estimates yet, but dozens of structures have burned, and they expect the loss of livestock to be significant."
Four of those who died were in the Texas Panhandle, where the Dallas Morning News reported three ranch hands were killed Monday east of Amarillo, and a fourth person died in the northeast corner of the region.

Max is OK but the farm operation he was working at was completely destroyed. He's having a hard time with it. So few animals were saved and the vast majority either died in the fire or were so badly injured they had to be euthanized. Thousands of animals died, thousands. There is no hay nor are there trailers to bring hay in. Burned.
