Default We now have the flu..

DH and I have the flu. It started Thursday night and came on fast. My throat and glands started to hurt and then it spread through my body. I woke in the middle of the night Thursday and my body was shaking all over, not from cold, but sickness... That was a new one.

Ive got a really sore throat and glands, headache, severe body aches, chills and just feeling really sick all over. I'm just sipping tea with honey, water and juice and eating the odd cracker. I have no appetite at all.

I went to see my Dr. Thursday to be checked over for my lower abdominal infection. Not sure if its a UTI or if its something in my colon. The ER Dr put me on Macrobid for a week. Thursday my family Dr. put me on Cipro 500 mg 2x daily and also Metronidazole, 500 mg 2x daily. I think that should take care of any lingering infection.

I'm taking Benylin All-In-One for cold and flu and then for the pain, Extra strength Tylenol ....and if I really start hurting, I take Tylenol 3's. DH is on a whole different Flu Medication Cocktail because of his heart. The Tylenol 3's are great for the body aches.

DS had some vomiting last Wednesday morning but that's been it for him. He's just hanging out in his room this weekend. Homework, Internet and TV. Hopefully he won't get it. My brother was here for the night Thursday, he left 6:00 am Friday morning to head back home. I wonder if he will get away unscathed?

Don't know id your son or brother will be sick - let's hope not. You know how miserable this is.

The body aches ARE one of the most miserable illness experiences I've ever had - they're everywhere & you feel trapped in your own body. Take what you need to when you need to, to try & approach a state where you can stand to be alive.

Don't worry about eating right now - doubt you feel like it. DRINK. Even if it's only a sip when you think about it... DRINK!

The worst of this should, mercifully, pass by Tuesday night or early Tuesday.

Keep an eye on your hubby - very important. Instruct your DS to check on him frequently.

Aw, AG. I figured you'd come down with it, after the ER visit.

Thanks ladies.

The flu meds take care of most of the symptoms, but when that 4 hours is up...I know it ....and then I'm scrambling to rip those blister packs open to load up on meds again.

I'm worried about DH, keeping a close eye on him. I've had the flu before, but I think this is his first 'real' flu as an adult... He can't believe how bad he feels.

This is brutal.

I've mentioned before - having had both flu, (three times now) & pneumonia, (twice), given a choice, I'd take pneumonia any day.

And I sincerely mean that.

Started to cough when I woke up this morning. Struggled to get air through my lungs. I've never had that before. Freaked me out a little. I went out to the living room where DH was watching TV....just in case it persisted to be a problem. It's getting through a little better now. If I wasn't on antibiotics, I'd be heading to a clinic or something. Hate to think why I'd be like without them. Better get the humidifier going.

Back in bed now.

WATCH THE BREATHING!!!

Go to bed but keep your top half elevated a bit. Get a bell or something you can use to let your hubby or son kow if you really start having problems. Antibiotics may NOT help with breathing problems that are flu related - depends on the source.

Are you retaining fluid that you can see? If you, be especially careful.

If you can't breathe reaosnably easy in bed, semi-elevated - get to emerg.

Thank Sue..I'm being careful. I have been sitting up in bed as much as possible. I did lay down to sleep for a while and when I got up, the same thing happened again.... DH keeps peeking in on me.

I did eat a bit finally....I think I'll go stand in a hot shower for a while, see if that helps.

I'm not retaining any fluid.

Okay - reason I was asking was... trouble breathing always gets me concerned about overactive cytokines & all that fun stuff & pneumonia &... everything. Okay, I'm nagging from afar - sorry.

Is your hubby hanging in there?

And did your son manage to stay well so far?

Hubby is doing ok. He did get his flu shot, not sure how much it's helping though. He's fine until he gets up to walk around. His body is aching quite a bit. He says he feels like crap.

DS is fine. He had that little bit of stomach upset last week, but that was it. (Knock wood) he rarely gets sick. I hope he doesn't get this.

I seem to have the worst of it. Better me, then them. Said by a true Mom.

My voice is really hoarse. I sound as bad as I feel.

Sleeping through it is the only way to go. But getting to sleep is definitely difficult.

I take a huge slug of Nyquil, and that gets you into some level of sleep, at least.

So sorry you are enduring this. Blecccch!

Thanks D.Gale and lintrap, I am definitely taking something tonight.

It seems like we've been sick forever and it started Thursday night! So, 4 full days. I read this can hang around for a week to 12 days.

I'm as weak as a kitten.

Four days? Okay, over the next day or two, the aching should really ease off. If you can drag yourself into a hot bath - do it. Have the brat clean it out. You may be too weak for effective threats but remind him that this sort of weakness is temporary & there are loads of ways you can make his immediate future hell.

Once you're in the tub - he can change your bed! Fresh sheets after a good soak helps with sleep. BTW - HE can clean the bathroom while you crawl into bed. Lord knows you've done it enough for him over the years of his life, eh?

Fevers should be a thing of the past - although another few episodes of the sweats may happen.

Coughing should slowly, slooooowly ease. The weakness I'm afraid, will take some time. Don't push yourself, Recovery from influenza is slow & its status always fragile. I repeat:

DO NOT PUSH YOUR LUCK!

Whatever you find yourself doing, stop a good 10-15 minutes before you think you're going to run out of energy. Any real weak spell or period of faintness - stop at once.

The recovery can be as tough as the illness - not least of which because we are so frustrated thinking of the work piling up.

I agree! Pneumonia can follow the flu.

Stay down and let people who are still well take care of you for longer than you think you need to!

Rest AG. Sleep will heal anything. Are you supping anything? Water, tea? Chicken broth? Order in some yummy Chinese chicken broth. One place I lived these was a Chinese restaurant who made the most delicious Won Ton Soup. The broth was excellent and when you'd start to feel better you could eat the yummy Won Tons too. That is the only way when the chief cook is down with the illness. Lets hope tomorrow is a much better day for you.

Thanks everyone... Sue, I don't have the energy to have a bath. I had a quick scrub in the shower and put on clean pj's....DS has been amazing, doing almost everything for us.

DH has to go into the office tomorrow to do payroll! I don't know how he'll do it. He's the only one with access to cheques! I'm sure it will be a quick trip.

I'm sipping lots of fluid. I got after DH because I don't think he has been and he's the one with the fever.

I'm so damn weak, I need to sleep.....

I hear you. There have been times when... the bath could be scrubbed & sparkling, filled with bubbling, nicely scented water heated to the exact temp, my change of fresh nightclothes laid out & hands willing to pat me dry, brush out my hair & carry me to bed & tuck me in, after bathing my limp, sore body.

And I couldn't bear the thought of expending that much... energy. Not sure what kind of energy would have been ivolved - maybe breathing while sitting upright?

And I knew I just couldn't cope - that's flu people. Even changing your mind takes too much energy.

Go to bed girl & sleep as best you can.

Yes won ton soup. My son had a huge bowl of it yesterday at the Vietnamese place, and I had a few of the won ton, noodles and broth.

Really restorative.

Chicken soup and juices, honey and tea are the way I cope with viruses.

Get better soon.
