If we stack like this link does (the traditional method) then we have 2 complete hives including the queen excluder.

Question: Many of the frames have old foundation in them, eventually, we hope to go to the foundationless method but for now we feel more comfortable with all the help we can get. Are they ok to use (rinse off/brush off the dust?) or should they be replaced?

As long as the foundations are not falling apart crumbly, they should be fine. Just use a bee brush to dust them off and the bees will clean them up to their standards. What sort of foundation is it? Are they drawn out? If not, are they wax coated? I know most of the newer foundations come with a very thin layer of wax on them already but that wasn't always so.

Some are drawn out and the new ones look like they have a light coating. We've been doing some more reading on the foundationless technique and will probably move in that direction with time.

We've got one hive in place and ready to go! Bee Club meets Monday and we're really looking forward to going.

Tonight was Bee Club and we sure are glad we've gotten involved. There is so much to learn and so much experience to draw on. We feel like we're moving in the right direction. They spoke very highly of Michael Bush's methods so a big THANK YOU to booger for pointing us in that direction.

Also, Boog I want you to know how much I appreciate your notes on your bee adventures. They are so informative! It must have been quite the experience getting to go to these events. I can't tell you how jealous I am. Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!

You're very welcome, BG. I'm glad they have been helpful to you.

And congrats on the bee club! I swear I learn more from hanging around those folks than I do from all of the websites and books lumped together.

Very lucky that your club thinks highly of M. Bush. Mine is made up of conventional beekeeps so I'm kind of the oddball and trying to figure it out as I go along. Still, I learn tons and tons from them -- we just vary in how we apply the specifics.

That doesn't look appealing to me at all. She must have the queen in a box in order to get the bees to swarm like that. Thanks for the post!

I was looking for info on essential oils that attract bees and found this forum (Michael Bush is one of the posters)

I don't have time to go through all of those threads right now. I'm allowing myself one cup of coffee then forcing myself outside for chores.

Anyway, when I saw Michael Bush, he gave the thumbs up to lemongrass oil to lure swarms. I know several other successful luring people who use it.

And, wouldn't you know it? I meant to order some the last time I placed an order for EOs (just last week!) and I forgot to get some. Duh.

FYI: I ordered a nuc last night from a local fella who's putting them together in the next week or two. Woot! I've never bought a nuc before, just packages and caught swarms & cutouts. I can't wait to see how they compare!

The bee man talked about his formula which included a touch of vanilla, peppermint and citrus along with lemongrass and using it to spray the nuc to encourage swarms he's trying to capture. I can see adding rosemary/thyme/oregano in tiny amounts considering they are blooming right now and covered in bees.

He also talked about spritzing the inside of the nuc with sugar water to help encourage them into the nuc.

Something else he mentioned was how he settled a swarm if it was trying to take off. He rings a bell! If he doesn't have his bell he claps his hands and the swarm will settle and give him some time to do his thing. I thought that was very interesting and plan to add a bell to my supply box.

What an amazing day we had today. We went with a bee keeper to extract a 3 or 4 year old hive hidden between a building and its addition. There was a window well that had been covered up by the addition and they had made quite a hive there. We worked on the roof top for nearly 3 hours and filled 20 deep frames with comb and bees. There were 2 queen cells so we're in business. It was an incredible experience:
